South Carolina should change its name.

There's lots to SC not to like. Still, North Carolina doesn't have a city that can hold a candle to Charleston.

Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, et al are all the civic equivalent to beige carpet. Wilmington and Asheville are the only two NC towns that even begin to have character, but even those two are only on par with somewhere like a Beaufort.

I have spent some time in Charleston. I have also traveled around the world. I just don't see anything special about Charleston. Its a small city with a port, and a few nice bars/restaurants. In that regard, its no different really than a hundred other cities that I have visited. I don't really want to live in either, but I would certainly prefer Charlotte to Charleston. In fact, it wouldn't even be close. More jobs, more to do, close to the mountains and beaches, and fewer mosquitos.
