Cam Newton on Sports Center.

Dear Lord. Did y'all think that during the first week of practice, ESPN was gonna come in and start handing out trophies? Guess what, kids? They sent a reporter to every teams camp. They are also going to report things.

If stupid were money, some of y'all would be solid gold.

At first, I wanted Cam to get the #2, only because I am a bit superstitious with trends in sports. You break a trend and bad things happen. Hence why guys have their pregame routines and whatnot that they NEVER break. And being an athlete from a young age, I totally get it. So, for that reason, I wanted Cam to keep the number he had been very successful with.

However, after really looking at it, I didn't want Jimmy to give up his number. There are a few reasons:

1) Submission is not good for competition. If Jimmy gives up his number to Cam, it is seen as an act of submission, which could turn into submitting the job to Cam easily; therefore, Cam doesn't get pushed to get better (not that I think he needs it, but we all know the mantra; competition breeds success).

2) It is Jimmy's number. He wanted that number for a reason, and it is a good reason.

3) I want Cam to understand that he has to earn everything in this league. Pay, play-time, success, and yes, even the number on the jersey with a Panthers logo on the sleeves.

No, it makes him look like a good teammate. He could have been a really good guy about it. He didn't need to hang onto the number that meant NOTHING to him. It was a dick move, and he'll be gone soon enough and then Cam has his pick of whatever he wants.

Clausen only wanted to hang onto the 'toy' like a spoiled child who only wants the 'toy' because another kid showed up at the party and wanted to see it for a minute. He's terrible at football--so soon the #2 will be cam's

= stupid

I used to enjoy her reporting, but maybe she was on her rag during these reports/interviews here... What a b*tch.

She seemed cold and conniving... I mean, you can tell when ESPN wants a headline, they usually bait players in any circumstance, hoping for a headline... But, it's usually handled in a less obvious and blatant manner.

How bad was she trying to sell that "You don't want his number, but you're after his job..." And she didn't even really pose it as a question, it was more like a statement. Horrible and uncomfortable interview by Nichols. Cam handled it nicely, but it was just her "attacking" style that grabbed my attention.

With Baker being a middle of the pack punter, I would cut his butt.. Jimmy gets 7, Cam gets 2 and that would be the end of the number game.

That's silly, it is Jimmy's number. If Jimmy doesn't want to give it up his number then why should he? If he was to have just gave Cam his number everyone would be "laughing" at him and calling him a pussy. He and Cam tried to work out a deal, Cam didn't like it enough to pay or whatever to get the number, the number is Jimmy's.

It is Cam's rookie year, so I can understand Jimmy not wanting to just hand it over to him. Then there is the competition aspect.

What it boils down to is Cam has to earn his number. If Cam becomes the starter for the season, there will probably be no way Jimmy holds on to #2 next year if Cam really wants it.

But who knows? Maybe #1 will stay Cam's number. New league, new team, new number.

    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
    • I think people aren’t patient enough with Young. It can take a few years for a QB to develop. Look at Darnold, Baker and most recently Daniel Jones.   he hasn’t been able to put up big passing numbers either cause of how much we run the ball. You can tell our coaching staff still hasn’t took the training wheels off Bryce and let him go all out. We’ve had some pretty bad receivers as well. We finally got a true number one last year and look how much Bryce improved. Still we didn’t really have any depth behind TMac. Coker was hurt for a lot of the year and XL was our #2. How many big plays or TDs has XL dropped? I think this year can be the year we see Bryce able to hit his stride. If not then we can start looking for another qb but I just ask people to be patient.
