Cam Newton to Start Friday

Not surprised. And I wouldn't be surprised if Clausen started game three, and Anderson game 4.

No way that happens unless Clausen is going to be the starter to open the regular season. Pre-season game 3 is the dress rehearsal for the regular season. That's why Rivera is naming the winner of the QB competition before the third game. The 3rd game will have the starters on the field for probably 3 quarters. I doubt Jimmy gets a chance to start before the the 4th pre-season game if Cam wins the QB competition.

well, we should know the starter based on performance. If Cam looks the part and doesn't implode......he looks to be the guy pending Clausen doesn't do something not seen to date.

If this game is a draw between him in Clausen....I think Cam is annoucned the starter.

I wonder if Cam plays the whole first half or like the Giants' game, the starter just plays the first quarter? I think they should get equal playing time. Preseason game 3 should be split JUST between Clausen and Cam...no Anderson. Game 4 sould be a quater each with the starters and let Anderson play the entire second half.

Pike is going to the PS if not to IR.

Well that was quick.

Don't expect Jimmy to start again except for injury to Cam.

If the Panthers wanted to see Cam with the starters, they would simply still let Jimmy start and put Cam in after the first series. Easy enough.

This is a statement.

rivera already said he'd give both QBs a chance to start before naming a starter.

rivera said that he would name a starter after this week's game.

therefore, rivera has to start cam this week.

logical imperative.

I fully expect cam to keep starting, but this should come as a shock to no one.

Cam Newton will start at quarterback Friday night against the Miami Dolphins, coach Ron Rivera announced after Wednesday's final training camp practice.

"Cam will start," Rivera said. "It's pretty much following the line of what we had planned throughout training camp and that's to go back and forth, and back and forth with our guys. It's a good opportunity."

Rivera said the first-team offense will play about half and that Jimmy Clausen will get reps with the first teamers so as to keep the competition even.

"We'll do like we did last week where Cam came in and played with the first group in the second quarter," Rivera said. "Again, we want to make sure everybody gets a chance to play and work with the guys and keep that competition going."

Rivera said he's not made a decision on who'll start the Sept. 11 regular season opener against Arizona.

Rivera's doing exactly what he said he would do earlier.

    • The era that you played in, and, more importantly, who you played with actually matters. Honestly, that's why these issues will be debated forever, as it's just difficult to say that this person or that person is better when you're discussing the passage of time. As for me, after Rice, Moss and maybe Megatron and T.O., there's probably a dozen or so guys that can be argued about to the cows come home. Personally, I'm not putting Fitz, Harrison, Johnson, Evans, or especially D-Hop, Jefferson, Chase or Hill definitely in front of Smitty (and Colston ain't even in the discussion). Context and all that stuff actually matters. Things like the triple crown matter.
    • Some of those guys? Yeah honestly you can.  I would 100% take Steve Smith over Larry Fitzgerald, Harrison, even Mike Evans. He is 100% a better player than those guys in his prime. If you look at the numbers Smith is historically under targeted in comparison to his contemporaries. He was only targeted 150 times or more only once in his career. Fitzgerald for example was targeted well above that 9 different seasons. Had Smith played with Peyton, Brady, Greatest Show on Turf, or even with Warner in Arizona he would broken records. His 2008 season was ridiculous accumulating 1400 yards in 13 games on less than 80 receptions. All time he also lost a season due to injury in 04, barely played WR as a rookie. Got robbed of 1k season with Clausen. Thats easily another 1800yds minimum that should have been tacked on to his #s. The only guys I’d say for certain are better than Smith are Rice, Moss, TO, Megatron, Julio Jones, Antonio Brown.
    • I parked in this lot a few times. It would take over and hour to get out of that lot after games. Never again
