Panthers/Bengals In-Depth

Agreed, p55. I don't think it'll be a walk in the park, and I honestly don't care about the outcome anyway. Like someone said before, the Colts have a terrible preseason record and the Lions went 4-0 in the preseason of their historic 0-16 regular season. But, when the dust settles and the 2011-2012 season is over, I think the Bengals have as good a shot at the #1 overall pick as anyone else. With possibly the Broncos and Bills as their biggest competition for it.

Things I have learned about the Bengals this week from their forum

1. The Bengals have only had 2 days of practice to prepare for this game, since they just played Sunday night.

2.The Bengals, as the op states are very thin as far as depth goes across their entire roster and will only be playing their starters for the first half.

3.Andy Dalton is there number 1 QB, and he has been unable to complete many passes longer than 5 yards. They are also going through the growing pains of installing a new offense, with their # 1 W.R. also a rookie.

4.Their offensive line, especially their tackles is their biggest strength at the moment. Also Cedric Benson is having a good preseason so far getting over 6 ypc (if I recall correctly)

5.A good portion of their fans feel as if this is the worst team they have fielded in years and I am inclined to agree

With that in mind, we should win this game with relative ease.

If we can't flatten Cincy then we probably are looking pretty rough for the reg. season. Especially if our offense is still sputtering with Smith being back.

Yeah, lets forget that we are starting a Qb who has been in the league 3 weeks and was reportedly going to need 2 or 3 years to learn an NFL offense. Let forget that while Smith and Newton worked out some in the offseason, they have not worked much at all in preseason. Lets forget that the Cincy will actually be gameplanning against Cam for the first time. Lets forget we don't have our right side of the line intact and are still installing plays.

Yeah the offense should be firing on all cyclinders and putting up the points just like the Jets who went to the AFC championship game last year, has the same offense and defense and increased their offensive weapons with a quarterback who has been in the league for several years.

Newsflash!!! We will look pretty rough in the regular season for the first half at least.

Things I know about the Panthers.

1. We have had i more day to prepare for Cincy and today is a travel day.

2. Our offensive line is decimated and we have little depth as well in several keys positions.

3. Cedric Benson will have a field day with the middle of our D line if we don't get our act together.

3. Newton is not very accurate either and is completing less than 45% of their passes. He has also failed to throw a TD in preseason.

4. The only reason we are optimistic is that last year's team was so horrible that anything is an improvement.

5. We will be fighting teams like Cincy to avoid the basement this year. If will depend on which quarterback gets it together quicker.

So tell me again why we should win with ease????

Cam Newton has gotten more reps with the first team this week.

Steve Smith will be back.

This week we are actually gameplanning a little. That means we run the ball this week. Last week, the coaching staff had Newton drop back 15-19 times(i'm not looking it up) and we only ran 3 times in the first half. All three of those were in the first quarter. Therefore we will have more of a balanced attack and things should be much easier for Cam this week.

Deangelo and Stewart will be playing

Gamble is back

Our 0-line is not horrible even with otah and schwartz out. Gary williams and Bernadeau got plenty of experience last year.

Plus as I said originally the Bengals are worse than us on paper and they'll have backups in against our Starters for an entire quarter.

What a difference a year makes.

Actually, thus far... not much difference at all.

The most troubling stat on Cam I have seen thus far, if true, is that he has yet to convert a 3rd down. He's got a lot of wood to chop before he even gets close to the end zone.

But... while P55 is right this game will be no cake walk you could easily argue that the Bengals are one of the worst teams in football right now and the table is set as well as it realistically can be for Cam to succeed. His backup QB won't even be playing let alone breathing down his neck. He's got his skill players in the lineup. The line is shaky but competent. But most of all... the Bengals offense is so bad right now Cam should get plenty of PT to establish the running game and move the football.

Cincy should make the Panthers look REALLY good. While the Panthers may not win 5 or 6 games this year...Cincy may not win 1 !

I predict Cameron has a GREAT game.

Running could be an issue. Right side of OL in protection could be an issue.

People are expecting the Redskin/Panther preseason game of 08......don't see that happening.

Dalton had a terrible start last week but was looking better and better as the game went on. I wouldn't assume that we'll see nothing but terribleness out of him. AJ Green couldn't hold onto the ball in the rain last weekend either.

The Bengals announcers commented that a number of the second team guys were out there pretty early in the game I think. They did an admirable job at keeping the Jets bottled up for quite a while during a period in which the offense was turning the ball over.

I personally think we should win, but it might be closer than it looks to fans. I expect we'll get better production from our run game this week than last, but I don't think we're going to run all over them too easily if they are healthy (haven't checked). While the Bengals are undoubtedly pretty bad... the reality is, we are too with a number of injuries. Hopefully our returning starters bolster our defense and offense and we have a fun ride tonight.

Really? We sucked on paper last year. We had the youngest team in the leauge and John Fox was our coach.

Now we have Thomas Davis back, Gambles out of Fox's Dog House. Smith['s happier. We have a legit recieving threats at tight end. Our young players have another year of experience.

They have injuries that they are dealing with too. They d-line is missing sims and Dunlap, arguably their best DE AND DT.

My prediction that we beat probably the worst team in the leauge in a preseason game where our starters will be playing thru 3 quarters and theirs only playing 1 half is not some crazy prediction.

Nobody likes a negative Nancy! Oh yeah, do the words Cam to Smitty mean anything to you? How about Cam to Olsen/Shockey/Nanne/Edwards/Pilares?

DeAngelo/Stewart?

No way in hell we lose this game tonight bro

No way in hell our Defense looks that pooty twice in a row.

The new Era begins tonight. I'm excited to see how they will roll offensively. It will be important for them to know that they can do it going into the Season opener. This is what u call a confidence building game.

Go get em Cam and company! We (the fans) are anticipating your coming out party tonight!

it's far from a gimme...regardless of how poorly the bengals are looking.

it's not being negative, it's being honest. we don't have things worked out yet. there are a lot of mistakes to be made. the right side of the line is in shambles. this is still a young team and quite prone to make mistakes. we have a young QB that still has a lot to learn.

true...the bengals are in arguably worse shape, but things can always turn around for a team. they could have an uncharacteristically good night. it only takes a couple plays to turn things around. for the panthers they could get into a funk early and just have one of those nights that things just don't work.

do i expect to lose? nope...but it's a possibility. we are coming off a 2-14 season and are a young team in a new system on both sides of the ball with a rookie QB and basically missing a whole season's worth of reps. it doesn't matter that the other team is in the same boat. there is no reason to be cocky about going into this game. this team has done nothing to give us any reason to be that way. being optimistic is fine, which i am, but i'm under no delusion that this team all of a sudden has things worked out to the point it can go into any stadium (in cincy or otherwise) and dominate.

Running could be an issue. Right side of OL in protection could be an issue.

No, we didn't suck on paper heading into the season. Great OL, best ground game in the NFL, stud WR, good D, promising young QB in Moore who tore it up to finish the prior year.

You say we sucked now.....but on paper we didn't suck at the time.

    • Some of you act like one can't learn from experience over time. Just because you may not know what you're doing in 2018 doesn't mean that you don't know what you're doing in 2025. Frankly, you grow from experience, and success and excellence gives first-time applicants the hand probably 99.999% of the time.
    • It's an interesting topic of conversation as sports evolves. I think ultimately it would lead to a number of small market franchises folding though. Especially in the NBA where there are so many bad teams that have been bad for years and years in some cases already. But as it stands I think athlete pay draft or no draft aside has reached a point where we can and should realistically ask should they make that much compared to the average person. Now college athletes is a different conversation but even that reaches a breaking point. But we could go down the rabbit hole on this even further into overall entertainment and talk about actors making absurd sums too. In the end I think in sports the powers that be won't allow these changes to even be considered because it opens the door for so many other variables. But who knows how long sports like football will realistically be around after people like us pass on. We're only just now learning about things like CTE which the league and the sport in general will only be able to run away from for so long. As far as the NBA goes my understanding is viewership has been steadily going down for a number of reasons but one crucial aspect is key players missing so many games. The NBA has to figure that out regardless. Especially when considering fans who pay to see these athletes compete in person. But hey I guess let's just try to appreciate what we've got while it still exists in this form eh?
    • I can't see a world where the money goes down, but maybe your lottery odds are now your contract numbers you can offer.  Thunder? You can offer Flagg 4 years, 20 million.  Hornets? You can offer Flagg 4 years, 80 million.  Some form of a system where the money is still there, but so is the freedom of choice (on top of bad teams getting *some* competitive advantage to signing them).
