"Through three games, Newton is a respectable 12 of 17 for 157 yards when throwing to his tight ends. And, he’s a decent 5 of 9 for 65 yards when throwing to his running backs. But when it comes to throwing to his receivers, Newton is a pathetic 4 of 26 for 53 yards."

Cam is partially to blame for this but damn our recievers need to get open and make some damn plays.

I don't want him to replace Clausen as the checkdown king but it might do him good to become the checkdown queen for a little while.

Pick his spots with with taking shots down field and making some plays with his legs until he gets more comfortable and improves his accuracy.

so does this make cam the new check down king?

No. Actually, his distribution between TEs/RBs combined is even with the number of throws to his WRs. The numbers are more telling of receivers not being open, drops, and a few bad throws. I say "a few" because honestly, a lot of Cam's incomplete passes are near misses, which says a lot for a rookie. There have only been a handful of incomplete passes to WRs where I had the "wtf?" look on my face. 4-26 is a scary looking number, but we must remember, that isn't all Cam. In fact, in large, it isn't Cam. Look at the TE numbers. Most of those are intermediate throws. About the same depth as throws to his WRs. That tells us that the WRs aren't getting open and they're dropping passes.

But, no. That is too objective. Instead, let's tear him apart and say "he sucks, he isn't ready. Let's start Clausen/Anderson." Also, he's passing, according to those numbers in the OP, exactly 50%. This is after his worst statistical game passing wise. So, people, can we stop freaking out now?

this is what i was implying.

people can defend him all they want, the one area cam is supposed to be good at...he sucks at.

so what you're saying is jimmy is smarter than what we give him credit for since he won't throw downfield to receivers who can't get open?

...and up until now he didn't have competent TEs to throw to.

Ummm those numbers are wrong...

He is total 21 of 52 which is 40% for 275 yards, which is 5.3 ypa.

I guess he could be discounting the throws that land near no one...?

Hardly. Jimmy checks down because he doesn't have the arm for deep throws. He has shown this numerous times. Also, I didn't say the WR numbers are low only because receivers can't get open. And Cam is guilty of this as well, sometimes there is a guy open, but the throw is high difficulty. Your above average NFL QB could make the throw, but these two young guys don't want to risk it in the middle of a QB battle. And, as I said, there are also drops to consider (which, of course, Jimmy has thrown his fair share of dropped passes).

Jimmy checks down a poo ton. Even now, with competent TEs. Jimmy CAN'T throw down field. Cam has shown he can. Cam hooks up with Smitty in the endzone or on that comeback route in the first half that the corner made a great play on to break up, people aren't bitching nearly as much. Cam can make downfield throws. Not consistently enough yet, as he's still learning and struggling (which is expected), but he is showing that he can make them. Get him planting his feet, get the run game going so the pocket gets more comfortable so he doesn't feel as hurried in there, have him step into his throws, Cam dwarfs Jimmy. And he will, in time. Right now, you don't lose much in terms of production passing either way (although I think Cam-led drives tend to move better than Jimmy-led drives). What you gain with Cam is escapability and a multidimensional offensive attack, which is why Cam is and should be our starter.

You're right, I screwed my math up. Still, I contend that, given better receivers who can get open and if the drops aren't there, Cam's numbers are above 50% with closer to 10 YPC. Just saying. There is a reason his numbers throwing to WRs are lower than his numbers throwing to TEs/RBs, and it ISN'T ALL CAM. He gets his share of the blame for his bad passes, but the majority are decent to good throws that are either near misses (which every QB has) or they are dropped passes.

So over 60 snaps under a combination of first and 2nd team units Cam has done the following.

21/52 passing for 275 yards. He's also rush for an additional 67 over 8 carries.

If you take his passes to w.r's out of the equation then his stats are as follows.

17/25 for 251 yards 14.7 ypc

8.37 ypc on 8 carries.

1 Rushing TD, no passing TD or Int

I wonder if someone has recorded a breakdown of how many of his passes would have been completed had he made the right read and accurate pass assuming the reciever could hold on to the catch.

    • Oh, the high expectations after a draft. Keep your expectations low, people. Darin Gantt's latest "Ask The Old Guy" gives life to one of those lessons about pro football reality as a fan: "Rasheed Walker was a three-year starter at left tackle for the Packers, so Freeling is going to have to work. Hunter's got another big 'un in front of him in Bobby Brown III and a different kind of defensive tackle in Tershawn Wharton. Chris Brazzell II's got a lot of traffic at his position. Zakee Wheatley has to be better than the chronically underappreciated Nick Scott, and Sam Hecht is a fifth-round rookie at the hardest position on the line to play, who probably doesn't have immediate positional flexibility, and a solid free agent addition in Luke Fortner in front of him. "Fans generally love their draft class as soon as it arrives, because there is no evidence to the contrary yet. Once guys get on the field, the reality begins to creep in, and the seasoned among you remember that if you get three or four good players out of a draft, that was an amazing draft." https://www.panthers.com/news/ask-the-old-guy-things-looking-up-after-the-draft-monroe-freeling-luke-kuechly-bryce-young-derrick-brown Don't get crazy. Winning the draft (or the offseason BTW) on paper always leads to good feelings and great expectations, especially when you seemingly succeeded the season before, but let's remember that the Panthers are very much a work in progress. Team building takes time. If we get a couple of starters out of the draft, it's a good draft, but three or four would be an amazing draft, and anything more than that is actually sensational--even if entails a few multiple high end rotational players along with three starters. Moreover, kind of within that same vein, the coaches have to let the kids off the chain. Remember the coach-speak of past coaches about competition that is anything but because coaches have their notions about veteran experience? Not saying that they're necessarily wrong, but sometimes I think their reluctance to put the young guys out there is based somewhat in dogma or possibly fear because big stakes are on the line (e.g., their jobs). It can be frustrating to say the least, but the coaches are supposed to know best. Again, I say all of this so that we can remember to temper expectations and keep them within the realm of reality. It's like telling your mind to think of it as something akin to under-promising and over-delivering. Leave room to be pleasantly surprised for the best case scenario, but be cognizant that that rarely happens. I would think at this point, most of us should be able to recognize growth when we see it, and sometimes that growth doesn't manifest itself in the form of immediate supremacy, but a setting of the stage for long term dominance for years to come. It seems like we're on track for an emergence by 2028 or 2029. We still have huge questions, but by 2029, hopefully we will take our seat at the table of the perennial contenders in the NFL.
    • You’re playing madden we’re talking real football stuff…. He does have you seen his special on internet he def thinks he’s getting paid
    • Without the team having an identity kinda hard to predict what they value.  They either are really trying to build a balanced team, or preparing for another swing at qb if Bryce doesn’t pan out. Seems like we value the o line but the $ spent there has been underwhelming besides Lewis, you could say it’s because of injuries but still hasn’t been worth the investment. as already stated, the whole handling of Bryce young as a whole has been ass backwards, we spent the years we’re supposed to take advantage of having a qb with a lower cap hit, building the team up to be adequate. now It appears, key word appears, the saints have done it correctly, which is painful to even think about. Regardless, I hope the front office has paid attention to qb contracts recently, such as Tua, Kyler, Daniel jones(pre colts) and don’t settle for subpar qb play at franchise qb rates
