Preseason Impressions: The Quarterbacks

Mr. Scot

You don't get it. We are not talking about busting. We are talking about being great.

For every Rivers and Rodgers there is Aikman and Manning. I get it, it can be done both ways. But when you invest the 1st overall pick in a QB you need to take every precaution to make sure they can do well.

Again it's just an opinion, but throwing a rook QB out there on a bad team is a terrible mistake. Your opinion is different.

if you look at what is around Cam.....the new scheme is the only excuse. They will get that part down soon.

The talent around him is just as good as any rookie that has started in recent history. They just need a QB to develop and remotely function well for them as a whole to operate.

Just looking at what surrounds a QB....explain to me how Ryan's, Sanchez's, Flacco's, etc. offensive talent around them made it more likely for them to succeed. Carolina just needs to start playing Panther football. Cam isn't doomed if he plays.

Freeman when he started as a rookie had much less around him (granted he didn't start week 1 and had OTAs....but Cam is not going to be doomed over 16 games.

Either he can or can't hack it. Not saying he will be great this year but the kid will either show he can play or can't on this level.

When you look at the line play in the preseason games so far, do you see anything That even remotely resembles good pass protection?

No I don't. Passing an absurd number of times is going to make the pass protection look even worse for an OL built to run.

Running the ball and being effective will help the OL's ability to pass protect.

Goes back to my point about the absurd pass/run ratio with Newton could be blurring everything. When Carolina runs well....they pass protect better.

Go back to last year, when was the worst pass protection? early on when the run game was in neutral.

I was mostly kidding but since you asked Newtons more built like Rothlisberger while Vicks built more like:jc:

I don't think it matters. Dan Morgan was built like a brick poohouse and was hurt more than he was on the field. Much smaller guys have taken just as much punishment and come out unscathed.

Either way, let's just hope Newton doesn't take enough punishment that we have to find out the hard way. I didn't want to draft him, but I support him now and don't want to see him killed prematurely.

I have noticed this and applaud you for such.

You're basing this on what?

Vick took an absurd amount of brutal hits early in his career, I think calling him frail is pretty silly.

If you look at the stats, you'll find that quarterbacks like Vick actually tend to take more sacks (and hits) than pocket passers do.

Not arguing that, just that frailty shouldn't be part of the conversation when it comes to Vick and we really haven't seen Newton take enough hits to make a determination.

His size will certainly help him out.

I'm just in an arguementative mood.

That's because you're a poo poo head :sosp:

(oops...crap)

I would hope most people would want Cam to turn out like McNabb not Vick.

I want him to be better than both.

    • One thing I didn’t consider is how thin this draft is at quarterback. That’s going to drive up the market for backups and borderline starters like Willis, Jones, and Jameis Winston. Because of that, we’ll most likely be priced out of the market for this tier of backup.
    • We've already beat the #1 seed twice, why not one more? (Packers and Rams were both #1 seed at the time we played)
    • My determination has come down to this. Based on recent QB history, has Bryce's improvement warranted 50m per season? Lamar is the only original team QB to play on his 5th year. The others took major deals at the end of the 3rd, before or just after the option was signed. Chances are, we're getting asked for the same.  I haven't rooted for Bryce to fail. I've rooted for him to succeed so big that them signing that extension would give me no worries about our future at QB at all. We haven't seen that level of play consistently that this year. We haven't seen it in the past 6 games.  We're about to be at a threshold with Bryce and I worry about what this front office will do. We have a history of bad decision making and Morgan has been part of that group making those decisions. I don't want Carolina in the same boat Arizona and Miami are right now. It has nothing to with being right. It has to do with wanting to win for more than a single season. We've never had back to back winning seasons. Faith in their abilities is not warranted at this point.
