Splitting with the saints....

Right now, I would be concerned about our ability to even slow down their offense. If we get some of the problems on defense ironed out, we might be able to give them a game at home.

I think we will be able to keep their offense off the field. The Saints have huge issues stopping the run and covering the middle of the field. Should make for some nice long time consuming drives. Our D should stay fairly rested.

I like our chances.

We have Jeff Otah back. That means we're going to run Williams behind Otah. We now have Olsen, so we're going to spread out the Saints and force their LBs to try and cover him. They won't able to do so because they're not good in coverage. Cam is going to scamble and extend a few plays, and take some deep shots down field to Smith and company. We have plenty of ways to attack the Saints weak defense.

The question is whether or not our defense can pressure and sack Brees enough so limit their potent passing attack. If our blitzes work, and CJ can presure him, then we have a shot. If not, it could get ugly.

l-o-l

The Saints just kept pace with the world champions for a 40+ point plus game and you are saying maybe we have a chance, but at what exactly? Scoring some points or winning the game?

Both those defenses looked like poo. The Packers had more stops but in the bigger picture they were suckers for the big play, the Saints didn't need to complete three 5 yard passes, instead they took 20 yards at a time.

You have your homer goggles on and I wouldn't bet money on a win vs. them. Until we can show we can score 40+ points, even on a 'suspect' defense. These teams are offensive powerhouses and all defenses will look 'suspect' vs. them. They key is the ability to score points, lots and lots of points. Rivera's is building the team for it but I doubt it is ready just yet. We may play them twice a year but this will be Rivera's first time facing them with the Panthers, there is little familiarity.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
