Testy locker room; Shockey pissed per Reed

I find people who complain about our playcalling or our offense ridiculous. We go from a team that can't generate 300 yards of total offense and averages 12 points a game to one that generates over 400 yards a game and 22 points. Then we have people bitching about the running game that generated almost 200 yards today. Seems some of the major complainers are guys who dislike Newton and want something to complain about because we lost. Somehow it is the playcalling that made Smitty drop the ball or threw the flag at Shockey. If we score those 14 points, we win and the fan base is not testy which just mirrors the lockerroom.

People want to blame someone for the loss. Yeah there are plenty of worthy candidates but in the end we didn't make enough plays to win.

But 29 points is enough to win, any way you look at it. Giving Chicago 34 points was almost criminal. They should be pissed.

With nearly 550 yards, this team should have easily scored point within the high 30's.

The Offense DID leave TDs on the field. Which were a direct effect of shoddy playcalling in the redzone.

Like in every other game this season.

He was responsible for all of it. He's the offensive coordinator, he needs to "coordinate" pass and run offense, because their running backs are just as capable as their quarterback is.

You've had 3 games to see the passing struggles in the redzone. Your running game was working today, and you abandoned the downhill runs even though they were the most successful ones. It's almost like he's still in experimentation-mode.

So, yes, I do blame him. Forte got 25 carries. DeAngelo got 10...for 82 yards. Stewart got 8 for 52, but neither got many in the 2nd half. Why is that?

There should have been some runs in the redzone from someone other than the QB.

Why? Was 2 running TDs not enough?? If Shockey doesn't get flagged and Smitty catches the ball in the endzone and this whole discussion is moot. Chud called a great game foor the most part. 600 yards and 29 points was enough to win. We get those 2 calls and it was 43 points.

But even with the way the ball bounced we gave this game away and it wasn't the offense that blew it. Seemms your dislike for Newtoon has now spilled over to Chud and the pass game. You must have an agenda. Otherwise there is really little to complain about especially compared to last year.

You want Davidson back?? Maybe Clausen too???

No it was an offensive interference call and a dropped TD by Smitty. That would have given us 43 which was more than enough to win.

From the Cam/Olsen thread...

“I don’t know,” Shockey said. “Maybe the official saw something I didn’t. I would like the league to go back and look at that and give an explanation because it was a key play in the game and that call right there… that hurts our team’s momentum.”

Replays showed Shockey barely touched Chicago Bears defensive back Charles Tillman on a seam route around the 10-yard line, but the flag didn’t come until after Shockey hauled in the pass in the end zone.

Shockey was upset after the offensive pass interference call and tried to get an explanation from the official as to what he did wrong, but said he was told to move on to the next play.

“We pay their salary, and I can’t get an explanation,” Shockey said. “So I would like to see the explanation when (the officials) do get graded. I don’t understand. I have no idea. There were a couple of things out there where I asked them the question and they don’t tell me (anything). They should be held accountable as well. They get paid a lot of money. They get to hang out and do whatever they do before the game and fly for free and do all kinds of (stuff) for free. So it’s very disappointing and disheartening. I don’t know what else to say.

“I haven’t seen the film yet, but I know for a fact the flag was thrown after I was in the end zone and I was by myself. I hope the league reviews it because I’m baffled. I don’t know what the (expletive) they were thinking. He had no words for it. He said to move on to the next play and soon the (expletive) game is over.”

Shockey also revealed that he has been playing with a broken finger since the first week of the season and plans to see a specialist soon. There’s no indication at this point that he’ll miss any time.

SMITH GETS TESTY, TOO: Shockey wasn’t the only one fired up in the locker room.

Wide receiver Steve Smith misunderstood a reporter’s question about coach Ron Rivera’s declaration after the game that not everyone on the team is growing at the same pace of rookie quarterback Cam Newton — and that needs to change.

Smith immediately jumped to the defense of his quarterback and his coach.

“It’s not strange,” Smith said, his voice growing tense. “You have kind of been used to the mediocrity of other regimes, and we have a coach here who expects greatness and us to play well. So if you’re asking me if Cam needs to step his game up, you need to go back and read the statistics, but I think Cam is doing a great job. Maybe you don’t agree. Maybe you’re sitting behind your typewriter and your little recorder and you think he’s not. But he’s playing his tail off. Anyone want to ask me any more asinine questions?

“That’s our leader,” Smith said of Rivera. “That is the guy who is charging down the hill and he doesn’t have a water pistol. He has a gun just like the rest of us, and we’re following him. That’s what we’re going to do.”

So... The refs need to be investigated and Smitty sh*ts on Fox.

We're clearly in good hands with Rivera, just wish we'd get these big plays on ST and Defense down to a minimum.

But But But...2-14 last year..new coaching staff..moral victories!!!

Tell me I'm wrong for being sick of the moral crap. Team obviously motherfreakin agrees with me.

You play to win the game. Not show "drastic improvement from last year"

definitely agree with you... this team should be winning. the rookie stuff is in the past, we obviously have a legit QB and weapons around him..

That was was a dog poo call on Shockey to bring back the TD. Would have won us the game and what a throw made by Newt' for it not to count.

Yeah, it's going to be a while before I get over that horrible game changing call. There is no doubt in my mind that the Panthers would have won today if that TD would have counted.

That has got to be about the 4th or 5th TD pass that Newton has had called back this year, but this one was the worst call, by far.

Yeah, knowing the history of Mike Martz, the moment the Panthers took that lead he would have given the middle finger to Forte, allowing CJ and Hardy to take over.

    • If we pay Bryce like a franchise QB we're completely and utterly buttfuged.
    • In my view, the realistic expectation for this team to compete will start 2027.  At that time, I think we could be looking at the following (this is HIGHLY speculative):   QB:  You know, Bryce.  I am not a fan, but they don't ask me.  But there is reason for hope--and here it is.  Bryce will be entering his prime.  Since we are likely to pay him, there will be changes that I include throughout this exercise--I realistically speculate on what they are going to do with Bryce and then I realistically speculate on what means in terms of the cap and other positions. Bryce HAS IMPROVED.  The idea is that if you give him more weapons and protection, that will continue.  His career:   At this rate, if his growth continues, by 2027 we should expect nearly 30 TDs and about 12 Interceptions and a Rating of about 98.  His completion percentage should settle at 65-66% or so.  If that happens, you can win with it. The following stats demonstrate how the Panthers will be able to afford it (and re-sign Ickey) My guess is they will require about $60m per year. This is why rookies who can play are important.  It also helps us see the blueprint.  You may disagree, but this is the cruel realities of the salary cap. Robert Hunt:  Cut post June 1 and save $19m.  Who do you replace him with?  Ickey. Tershawn Wharton:  Cutting him saves nearly $15m.  We should all hope to see Aaron Hall (UDFA) make the roster and play well.  Regardless, this is a position we would likely have to address in the next draft. Trevin Moehrig:  Cutting Moehrig as the starting SS saves this team $16.5m.   Ransom will be on year 3 of a cheap rookie deal and should be more than ready to take the reins.  their styles are similar.  Furthermore, FS Wheatley (R, 4th round) will be starting. Taylor Moton:  So much depends on his knee, but I have an idea that he can play another 3 years.  extending him could save the team about $5m per year.  Cutting him outright would save the team about $21m. In the most drastic situation, we have to cut Moton and the other three players mentioned.   We would need (in all likelihood) a starting DT and RT.  It is possible that the DE would be addressed, but Wharton's production (so far) could be equaled by a rookie.  Look for a cut free agent and a 2027 draft pick here.  If you cut Moton, you save $21m, and that would be the only big hole to fill.  Having Ickey at RG gives you some depth at T, and Ickey could be the guy.  T could be pick in the 2027 draft (first round), fwiw.  It saves you $21m while costing you $5m, for example. We get younger, creating a core of Freeling, Hecht, and the RT first rounder in 2027) along with Ekownu (second contract in the $15m range, and Lewis, whose contract would be in the $16m range if not extended.)  The OL cuts (Hunt, Moton) would save $40m.  The OL would get younger and still solid with veterans at G.   By cutting Wharton (no brainer if his play stays the same) and Moehrig (good player--but we have Ransom on a rookie contract who would not be that much of a drop off--if any) in addition to Hunt and Moton, we would save over $70m in cap room. We would be able to give Bryce bag  and we would have enough to re-sign Ickey (if the knee is not too risky) to a Guard contract (probably at a discount, coming off that injury).  Furthermore, we could add a RT in the draft (or a RG if Ickey moves to RT) and that would be the only large hole to fill. Correct my logic if you see issues-- On defense, in addition to the aforementioned, Scott ($2m contract) is out, replaced by a 4th round rookie contract. CB Jackson's contract ($7.8m) expires and he is (possibly) replaced by a rookie contract.  At Edge, patrick Jones II's $10m contract expires and he is likely a reserve, and his role is absorbed by Phillips, Scourton, Princely, and possible an UDFA like Isaiah Smith or a 2027 draft pick.   These productive developmental players over the past 2 drafts will pay huge dividends.  On paper, I see the team getting much younger and possibly better while cutting nearly $100m and reallocating that money to get more production.
    • If everything played out and that last thing happened, I probably just quit.
