Considering he has had a couple picks that weren't entirely his fault, the reams we've played, the team around him, and the game he had to play in a monsoon, I'd say Cam is already better than around 13 of those ahead of him...

At this point in the season, I don't see how one can make a valid argument that the top 3 QBs in the league aren't Brady, Brees, and Newton...

Rodgers above them all

Aaron Rodgers?

After yesterday, that kid is ready. He is keeping plays alive and making some insane plays throwing the ball. Get LaFell out there at number 2 full time and see if he and Cam can build on something they already got going! That was a sure TD for LaFell if he hadn't slipped in the end zone.

Rodgers is a very good and efficient QB, but its true, people do underrate his supporting cast, specifically his receiving core. Even though he's one of the best, I dont look at Rodgers as CARRYING the Packers the way Brees does the Saints or Brady does the Pats. Pack can still win when he doesnt put up huge #'s.

and like 21 in completion percentage

Meh... He has a great supporting cast and hasn't had that much opposition... Plus, they've played us...

Don't get me wrong, he's up there too, but Cam is playing better than almost anyone except maybe Brady...

No doubt. Even their rookie WR, Randall Cobb, is already looking like a star. If we had a guy like that, it would help us out tremendously. Just imagine Cobb returning punts for the Panthers instead of Armanti Edwards, not to mention that he's already a good WR to boot.

No he isn't. Cam is playing great and showing he has the potential to become an elite NFL QB (and there are VERY VERY few).

But Cam isn't playing better overall football than everyone. He is a rookie....with a LOT on his plate. Redzone play......weighs in more heavily than inbetween the 20s.

Rodgers, Brady, Brees, Rivers, Schaub and a healthy Peyton Manning are all guys that I would take over Newton without question. To say otherwise pretty much requires a peek through the homer glasses.

On the flipside, I would take Newton easily over Vick, Roethlisberger, Hasselbeck, Stafford, Romo, Kolb, Campbell, McNabb, Orton, Sanchez, Grossman, Cutler, Alex Smith, any of the rookie or second year guys and any of the WCO products.

Guys like Josh Freeman, Matt Ryan, Eli Manning and a few others, it'd be a coin flip.

But is the question who you would take Cam over for your franchise......or who has been playing better football for 4 weeks.

Well I framed it in my mind as "who is the better quarterback".

As far as who I'd take over Newton in reality right now, when you factor in age and years of play, probably about the only two guys I could see swapping for would be Josh Freeman or Aaron Rodgers, and with a gun to my head probably only Freeman (great as Rodgers is, he's in his seventh season).

Are guys like Brady and Brees better? In the short-term, sure, but Newton's got his whole career ahead of him.

I admit I may not be the most objective because I am a homer and watch every snap from newton and not have the luxury of doing that with all the elite QB's.

That being said Cam is top 4 this season so far.

Here's my list for this season so far

1.Brady

2.Rodgers

3.Brees

4 Newton

    • I hope Bryce balls out. Wouldn't bet the farm on it though. Morgan has to be practical though. He was placed into a situation where he was compelled to give Bryce a long look. There really haven't been any more practical options due to who has been available at the position. The Panthers had already put their chips in with Bryce, so putting more chips in by borrowing against the future and stacking on that by borrowing against the future without really having the requisite draft capital was a nonstarter. We could either dump Bryce and go dumpster diving for known and unknown JAGs at the position, or take out chances and let it play out with Bryce and hope for acceptable returns. Due to what looks like some good moves in the draft and free agency, it appears like we're finally getting into a position where we can take a swing again if need be without destroying the core of the team. I understand that you'll believe it when you see it, but Dan is gonna move on if Bryce can't cut it. There are too many professionals lives and careers tied to Bryce to simply accept the status quo.
    • Football is the ultimate team sport. No sport is more dependent on others for your success - including coaching. I don't know if Bryce is the guy, but I do know this has been a very bad team all around since he got here. One of the worst o-lines and coaching staffs I've ever seen his rookie year. One of the worst defenses and receiving groups (including TEs) I've ever seen his 2nd season - with a rookie HC and OC. An improving WR group his 3rd season mostly due to a rookie. The only other WR of note didn't really play well until after the 10th game of the season due to injury. Still no receiving TE to speak of. And lost games because of the worst pass rush in the NFL. And the only speed he's ever had on the field was DJ Chark. A washed up DJ Chark that played here one year and has had 31 yards receiving since leaving.  Carolina had no business moving up for a QB in 2023. They weren't ready. Especially if it meant trading your only good WR to do it. Now finally there's potential on defense. Potential on o-line. Potential at WR, including some actual speed in a game where speed kills. If BY falls on his face this season, then he has to own it. Situation may not be perfect, but it's at least NFL average across the board. I won't beat him up for being bad in bad situations on a bad team. But a 4th year QB has to be able to control the offense and make players/coaches right. The team looks good enough on paper to show what he can do now.
