Cam Newton a product of his system?

The passing game is built around Cam's ability to throw the ball downfield with accuracy.

Derek Anderson, bless his heart, doesn't have a howitzer for a right arm.

I feel like the OP doesn't fully appreciate Cam's armstrength.

He's gotta have one of the strongest arms in the league.

Derek Anderson has a strong arm too. His accuracy is the concern.

There's a huge difference in Newton and Anderson. Yes, Anderson can make the throws. But what Newton brings is mobility and a running threat. With the running threat, the defense has to account for where Newton is at all times, or he'll take off for a ten yard gain. That generally means one less defender in deep coverage.

As for the mobility, look at all the plays that Newton extends with pocket awareness and his ability to escape the rush and then throw. If Anderson is back there, that's a sack. Frankly, Clausen's dink and dunk would be better than Anderson trying to be Cam. That's not to take away from him, but he just isn't physically equipped to do what Newton does.

I'm glad I read ahead because you pretty much summed it up.

part of what chud and shula did pre-draft was go into rivera and hurney and show them what they could do with the offense to make use of his skillset.

I can't verify it, but I also suspect Chud and Shula may have knocked on Gus Malzahn's (the Auburn offensive coordinator) door and had a short discussion.

Either that or they just directly ripped off what they saw on film of Newton last year which could also (and maybe more likely) be the case.

To the OP slap yourself...the 2006 CLE Browns offense was nothing like this...AT ALL. The only carry over is an emphasis just like the emphasis in SD to pick up yards in chunks, and vertically stretch the field.

That year CLE ran the ball much more with Jamal Lewis, there were no QB Powers O's, Options, etc. This is a new offense with a carry over in philosophy regarding the vertical stretch. Cam is what makes this offense go because it's built around his skill set.

If Anderson were to start I do not think we'd see the same production, Kurt Warner was very successful in the ARi offense, insert Anderson under the same OC...and he lost his job to the rookie Skelton.

Lets not forget Derek Anderson had a pro bowl year under chud...So unlike Indy, I feel if Cam went down we would have little to no drop off in the passing game... (rushing would obviously take a hit) I feel the coaching staff feels the same and that is why Anderson got a 5 year deal...The offense is built solely around a strong arm. Yes it does require accuracy but for the most part it's about stretching the field. Cam Newton is amazing don't get me wrong, but I feel if he went any where else we wouldn't be comparing him to the MJ of the NFL. Chud deserves a deal for the ages for the way he turned this O around. It's plug and play for years to come Panther's fans enjoy!

This same argument was made about jeff davidson in 08 after he turned our offense around. The problem is it was for one season. Let him prove himself for more than a year.

    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
