Rivera hasn’t helped defense

So why is this team 2-6? Mostly because their defense can’t get stops. Ron Rivera arrived from San Diego knowing the defense was shaky, but they have been worse than expected.

The linebacker group was decimated by injuries. Chris Gamble is enjoying a revived season at cornerback, but the rest of the secondary is mediocre. Charles Johnson has looked worth his big money at defensive end, but starting two rookie defensive tackles hasn’t worked.

No love for Charles Godfrey?

As much as Cam brings to the table, and I am a huge Cam fan, it's frustrating seeing nobody in the press giving credit to having Olsen, Shockey and having healthy running backs this year opposed to last year. This is a team game and I think Cam understands that.

As much as Cam brings to the table, and I am a huge Cam fan, it's frustrating seeing nobody in the press giving credit to having Olsen, Shockey and having healthy running backs this year opposed to last year. This is a team game and I think Cam understands that.

Because, first of all, you have to be able to see over the offensive line and not get scared because the bodies are flying around you in that pocket.

      Certainly we had a very solid free agency. There are things to like about Morgan. There are also things to be weary of. Beyond that I mean this isn't really that different from past iterations of the Panthers. In that I mean pushing ourselves up against the limits of the salary cap to maximize a team that could ultimately end up just being mid. And at the end of the day the only area of success that will matter in making this franchise a legitimate Super Bowl contender for now and the next few years will be if Dan Morgan can navigate multiple successful drafts. And not just in the early rounds either. He needs to find high end talent in the mid to late rounds too. That is what separates the pretenders from the contenders in the NFL. Until that comes to fruition nothing is going to truly change for the better regarding the trajectory of this franchise.

      A 3rd round pick that only has 5 pressures and 10 tackles through three seasons? Are we sure this isn't a misprint? That's gotta be a Hurney 2nd rounder.
