One thing we can all agree on as Panther fans

Brian Murphy sucks as our special teams coordinator and needs to get a pink slip.

Week after week he constantly affects us negatively, I don't think we have had one good play on special teams unless you consider touchbacks good plays.

I don't know if this guy just cant game plan, motivate his players to get the best out the of them or what but there has been 0 improvement since week 1.

This guy has got to go.

Not defending him, but also have to consider that the ST players just suck at ST.

It could be partially a trickle down effect with all the injuries we have, we've got guys playing STs that normally wouldn't even be playing at all... BUT, coaching should be making up for that... these guys are NFL players. Something just isn't right all around with STs.

Exactly. Special teams is for backups, guys who aren't quite good enough for the offense or defense. If you aren't good enough to be a starter AND suck at special teams how did you make it to the NFL?

only positive thing i see from his continued employment is better draft picks.

still not worth it to see that kind of ineptitude.

i'm not just pissed at him, though. jason baker needs to be gone yesterday. he's sucking as a punter and a placeholder. i'm not happy with mare. we should have gone after shayne graham. we absolutely needed to part ways with kasay because he is very much on the decline and he still would have required another roster spot to do kickoffs.

i'm tired of project returners. throw both pilares and edwards to the curb. either draft or pick up in FA or trade for someone that actually knows how to do it and can do it well. i have no problem with us using a roster spot on an actual return specialist if he can get positive yardage.

until we have a special teams unit worth a crap, we should use them as little as possible. on 4th and short, just go ahead and try for the yardage. we are much more likely to convert that than get our 3 points or stop the punt returner. coaching needs to quit play calling under the assumption we have anything close to a competent special teams unit.

i think that is part of the problem. we aren't basing roster spots on whether they can actually play good special teams.

this has been a problem for years and that falls on hurney. special teams is an afterthought. you have a "football player" you like, but who doesn't actually fit anywhere? draft him and try to turn him into something he's never played before just to give him a job. edwards was a mistake that we need to rectify by just cutting our losses. pilares was a RB turned into a WR that we tried turning into a returner. meh. goodson...had he ever returned before coming here? i don't think so. could be wrong, though.

we need to start getting special team players who have solid experience and who have made a career out of special teams play. guys who have found that to be their niche. we don't need a lot of them...just enough for a solid core. get a couple guys who are good gunners and who can make big tackles in an open field who can also block in an open field. get returners that you don't have to train how to play.

meh....the whole thing is just sooo frustrating.

This would probably be the biggest help to special teams. Not everyone can play it, some guys just can't do it or don't like it and therefore don't put as much effort into it or whatever.

I miss the days when we we had people like karl hankton as leaders on special teams.

i was thinking that same thing.

he was listed as a WR, but i think he never really lined up as one. i can remember one game.

i know, though, that if we actually did try to bring in someone like that people all over this board would be freaking out over bringing in a WR with no reception stats, regardless of how good he was at special teams.
