Armanti Edwards Progression Thread

I think he has shown some improvement actually. Instead of juking around he takes off and tried to get positive yards. I actually thought he was going to break that one on Sunday. Too bad it was called back.

Honestly the whole special teams unit on punt returns and kickoff returns looks better. I think more of the starters are actually playing special teams than in the past. I also think that Rivera has told some players that the way to make the team is excel at special teams. On the other hand the field goal team and the punt/kickoff coverage units are very hit and miss. One time we cover and do a great job, the next we get a kick blocked or give up a big return.

On most of our punt returns, the opposing teams gunners are never challenged, with at least one breaking free. That's a tough recipe for most punt returners to start with.

The one he broke on Sunday had both gunners tangled up and out of the picture at the time of the catch. It only gives a guy an extra second or two, but it makes a huge difference.

Still, I think he's not performing as he should. A good punt returner has a bit of a fearless streak and he hasn't shown that. That being said, I'm not sure I wouldn't run away from the ball screaming if I was in his shoes during a punt, so he's got me there.

Wish we'd have seen more snaps to him as a QB in the preseason. The kid was very, very talented in that role and a pint-sized Cam Newton when he was in college. But then again, I'm not the coach for this team.

So with all the ignorance spewed in this thread let me ask this simple question..."Is blocking more important than the returner?" Better yet, would Devin Hester be as successful if he had our special teams unit blocking for him vs Chicago's?

Now for those with little intelligence I am not comparing Edwards' skill to Hester's, I am asking would Hester still make the plays he has with our special teams group? Conversely, do you think we'd see more out of Edwards if our special teams unit was better?

how often do you see 4 guys standing in hester's face? because ive seen at least two or more go unblocked everytime edwards has caught a punt except for sunday when he ran it back 45yds. armanti is no hester but he does have some pretty crappy blocking going on.

I hear what you are saying, but TBH I think the returner is more important. Of course AE would be better with better blockers because they go hand in hand. Sometimes though you just have to make a play. He hasn't made a play yet.

I hear your point but if there is no play to be made, can you make one...he's not a rare talent like a Hester, Peterson, Jackson, he's average at best. But out of our reserve players who's better suited to take his place, Pilares maybe...Munnerlyn is a starter, does anyone else even have PR return experience on the roster (that's a serious question)?

TBH due to injury, and the pick invested in him he'll be there until we can make up for the bad trade that turned into Armanti Edwards. But I'm not against him finishing the season as PR, he's protected the ball, and has done ok for a converted college QB IMO.

I agree, which is why I posted what I did. Hard to return without blocks to help spring you.

Our special teams is garbage you can tell when he actually gets to return one that he has some skills. Give it some time damn...

EXACTLY! How could anyone judge Edwards' ability based on such horrible special teams play? BTW, I have NEVER watch an ASU game and couldn't care less about their football program - my alliegance is with the Panthers and it's crazy to assume everyone that defends the truth is a "homer". Don't Check My Chicken!

Thanks, OneBadassCat for speaking the truth here!!!
