Record watch: Cam Newton

A Truly Amazing Season for Young Mr Newton, a record already in Canton, and the Historical Football that Mrs Newton gave back. He was giving out food today to the less fortunate. We will have to build a new wing for all the records Cam will own in a few years.

Lets hope he stays healthy and likes us as much as we like him!

My alcohol fueled thread from last week non-withstanding, if Cam can make it past the 18 rushing TD record, he'll not only own the rookie record, but he'll beat out that Sanders guy for most rushing TD's in a single season by any guy who half-way played QB ever in pro football, not just post merger.

It'd be pretty cool, if not obnoxiously obscure.

i think he should have the most tds in a season for a rookie too.

truly the greatest rookie season ever only to questioned by stupid losses.

if only he had the defense and some offseason time, he would be the greatest undisputed rookie of all times...........

Cam Newton going for 4000 passing yards and 700 rushing yards = awesome

Cam Newton throwing for 20 touchdowns and running in 20 touchdowns = awesome

People still thinking Andy Dalton should win the OROTY = priceless

He'd have to go on a tear to close out this season, imagine him joining the 20/20 club. How cool would it be for him to be the only QB to throw and run for 20 touchdowns each in a single season. It's just crazy how many awards and trophies he will have earned over a three year span.

UPDATE:

Cam now holds the record for rushing yards by a QB in his rookie season.

Old record was 552, by Vince Young... Newton now has 554 with 3 games to go.

He is now only 167 passing yards shy of breaking Peyton Manning's rookie record.

    • This is why they'll lose. The draft pick value is substantial vs. minimal cap impact.
    • You keep mentioning the impact on the salary cap, but that's literally not the point with all these 2nd Rounders, it's all about precedent and it being a slippery slope that would lead to more fully guaranteed contracts for veterans. That's what the teams are making sure this doesn't get to, because yes, you're right, the guarantees for a 2nd rounder won't have significant cap implications if the player doesn't work out.  But you give that fully guaranteed 3-4 year contract to a FA who then shits the bed in year 1 and never regains the form that got them the contract, then yes, it's going to screw up your cap management and won't be a rounding error. And you can say it's a big leap to go from guaranteeing a 2nd round pick's contract to a big FA signing, but it's really not.  Once teams start giving them out, it's only going to keep growing and be insisted upon by agents in other situations and once the ball starts rolling down the hill, it's going to be impossible to stop it's momentum. Also, the only reason a 2nd rounder's contract would be a rounding error, is explicitly because contracts aren't guaranteed and teams can finagle the cap hits with various tactics.  Once contracts become more and more guaranteed, that won't be as easy to do, if even possible at all, and those individual rounding errors become serious problems in totality.
    • Yep!  Jake wanted to stay. It’s been reported a lot that he did. Tulsky waited too long to give him that contract.
