Marvez on the 10 worst teams in the league

Recommended Posts

Ignore the "1-15" thing. He's got a little of the tism.

CAROLINA PANTHERS

Record: 4-8

What went wrong: Coming off a 1-15 season, the better question is what has gone right? Start with rookie Cam Newton. He already has set the NFL single-season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (13) and proven to be a more polished passer than expected. Ron Rivera also is off to a good start in his first season as an NFL head coach.

What’s left to play for: The Panthers have a chance to damage the playoff standing of three contenders (Atlanta, Houston and New Orleans) while furthering Newton’s development.

What’s next: Don’t expect another wild offseason spending spree, but the Panthers desperately need to upgrade some of their defensive talent, particularly at defensive tackle.

"another wild offseason spending spree"?

When was this?

Also, next offseason is the best time to go on one of these wild spending sprees, especially on defense. The D needs a serious overhaul and if it doesn't happen, Hurney needs to be kicked out of town.

That's your last straw for Hurney?

I don't get the obsession with Hurney, there's not a GM out there without his share of big whiffs, or ones that luck into great picks. Or are we going to consider Mike Brown a genius because he managed to hit on Green and Dalton, and swindle Oakland?

Hurney's much better than your average NFL GM, and now that Rivera has a hand in picking talent we may find more draft gems over the years.

As far as big trades or free agent deals, we need to be closer to knowing exactly which pieces we need to put us over the top before investing tons of money into veteran help.

It must be me but I don't know that we need to go wildly spending on the defense. We need to find a great LB to replace Davis when/if he goes down, we need to find a second corner who can be as solid as Gamble, and we need a 3 technique DT. When our IRed players get healthy next year we will have taken care of the linebacker position and the nose tackle with the exception of the Sam. And ironically our depth issue won't be as big a concern given that many of the current starters will go back to rotational positions next year when our starters return. Between a few free agents and the draft, we should find who we need to fill in the holes.

I think our last 'wild offseason' was when we signed Lucas and Wahle.

    • I guarantee it makes a difference. Give up 2 scores and its basically over until garbage time. The offense can barely drive the length of the field in 3 quarters. The defense has been gutted to build around a QB that is possibly the biggest bust in NFL history. For what we've put into the offense the past 3 years, we should be dropping 30 bombs with regularity. The only 30s we get are FGs.
    • Not according to some fly by night fantasy crusader!  There were 10 drops that should have netted Bryce another 450 yards and 7 TD’s
    • What? Am I mistaken that his rookie year included a horrible coaching staff and support players.   It's wasn't just Bryce.  I won't judge any player from that yeah.  It's impossible to make an accurate assessment on any player under those conditions. It's that simple. You break down each play and look at each player, what the expectation was, what happened during the play and what circumstances affected every player and position. There a reason why the narrative was he could be the biggest NFL bust in history.  Then after his benching he started to show remarkable improvement. Thus all the talk from fans and media about how dramatic of a turnaround it was and that Carolina no longer had a QB problem. First game this year the whole team stunk it up.  Why?  Plenty of blame to go around including Bryce. Improvements do not come it a nice straight line angling up.  I think Sunday was a step back for the whole team.  Still plenty of time to see if it was a bad outing to grow from or another indicator of issues that can't be overcome.
