I'm not a UNC fan at all but I don't know how you can say they don't produce good DL when Peppers arguably the NFLs top DE played there. What do you want them to have four all pro DLs or something?

If your gonna talk about a school who doesn't produce good DL talk about FSU.

Is it?

My bias is towards schools who have a tendency to produce busts at certain positions. Peppers has been the exception not the rule.

There is no "rule". They've had busts and they had successes, just like every other school. Don't know how you can compare recent and future picks to examples from completely different coaches and systems anyway. The old Mack Brown crop of players has absolutely no bearing on how the Butch Davis era guys will turn out. Balmer is the only guy in recent history who I would call a real bust, and he sucked in college so I never figured out why he went in the 1st round anyway.

Despite his measurables that just scream a Peppers/M. Williams type of dominate 4-3 DE, Coples has always looked better playing inside while at UNC IMO. I used to think of him as a DE, but more and more, I think the safest bet for a team taking Coples is taking him with the intention of playing him at DT in a 4-3.

I've said this a bunch of times....coming from a UNC student who watches all the games, we don't want this guy. He's a freak of nature athletically, but really doesn't produce on the field. He is wayyyy to risky to pick as a DE or DT in the top 10.

He may pan out, but this guy should be dominating every Saturday, and that didn't happen this year. His stats are inflated because of high production against terrible teams.

If he fell to the 2nd (which isn't happening) I would take him then, but I feel that your first round pick has to be sure fire, which I'm really not sure it is with Coples.

I think your reasoning is sound. I am an OU fan and say the same thing about Landry Jones.. the guy has bust written all over him. I like non-homer fans that can evaluate their own players subjectively.

I agree, but then again, the exact same thing was true about Mario Williams. He padded his stats against non-BCS teams and then usually disappeared during ACC play. He's turned into a damn good pro.

agreed, and excellent point, but I think with your top picks you take the most sure fire candidates, then swing for the fences in the later rounds a la Hardy

I see alot of boards with him as a top 10 pick and several have us picking him.Maybe they have seen something that I have missed but I have not been top 10 pic impressed by him.Though I did not follow him closly his stats are less than overwhelming but I understand that can be skewed by doubleteams etc... I dont buy the he came from UNC crap...that is only true with DEs from Florida State.

His stats aren't there because he's a true DT that can play outside, He almost always get's doubled or triple teamed and doesn't have DE speed to break the double block and get around the edge. UNC played him at DT a few times this season and he exploded and at DT last season he exploded play wise. He's going to go in the Top 10 and where Carolina is picking he's the only defensive player worth taking that will still be there.

Carolina needs to fix it's defense and he's a better fit at DT then DE, gives Carolina flexibility when playing the 3-4 as he can line up at the 5.
