CarPanfan Mock draft V 3.0

Now that Carolina's draft status is pretty much settled, just a matter if it's 8th or 9th overall. Here's my latest mock draft.

1st overall pick - Quinton Coples, DT/DE - Excellent strength and size. 6-6 285 and has the frame to add more bulk and mass. Plays both the run and pass well, comes into the NFL with a variety of Moves including a nasty bull rush. Can sometimes play too high when playing DT, but has the strength to overcome that. Shows good lateral quickness and initial burst off the line out of stance, but doesn't have elite speed for the DE spot. 4.70 40ty time. His length causes problems for OL and RB's. Probably the most versatile DL player in the NFL draft as he can play 4 positions well. Best fits are as a 4-3 DT or a 3-4 DE.

2nd round pick - Chase Minnifield, CB, UVA - Good size at 6-0 and 185 pounds, shows good speed and should run a 4.48 40ty. Plays both man coverage and zone well. In Man coverage can play the press and off coverage well and gets a good initial punch off at the line. Needs some refining in his back peddling technique. Fluid hips, changes direction well.

Zone coverage - Plays well and understand zone concepts well, Stays alert and makes a good initial move towards the ball out of his zone. Solid open field tackler who plays the ball well in the air.

4th round pick - Keenan Robinson, OLB, Texas Speedy, and agile defender with good size at 6-3 and 240 pounds. Plays with a nasty streak and handles both the pass and run well. Reacts well to misdirection pays and is willing to attack linemen to fill a gap. Plays really well in coverage and drops back into coverage fluidly. Nice speed and awareness in coverage. Needs a bit of refining on his tackling technique and how to attack linemen when rushing the passer (not asked to rush the passer in Texas defense)

5th round pick - Joe Adams, WR/PR/KR, Arkansas Excellent speed at 4.38, decent size at 5-10 190, has an exceptional initial burst off the line and has great vision with the ball. Can be moved around on offense from RB-WR and would be a day 1 starter at KR/PR. Decent hands and route runner, but a bit inconsistent in both. Below average strength and would need to add some in the NFL.

6th round pick - Jerrell Young, FS, South Florida Extremely raw player with excellent size and speed for a safety. Has all the athletic abilities in the world to be a starter in the NFL, just needs to developed technique wise.

7th round pick - J.B. Shugarts, OT/G, Ohio State Played really well at Guard late in the season, played really well against Still. Big guy at 6-7, but will need to add some bulk in the NFL.

+1 for Shugarts

Shugarts' streak continues. With a false start penalty in the first quarter of the Gator Bowl, Ohio State offensive lineman J.B. Shugarts finishes his college career with at least one offsides penalty in four consecutive bowl games, and in 24 total games over the course of his career. Hey man, you gotta leave as you lived.

Yeah I've seen people saying that Coples isn't a sure thing. Haven't seen enough of him to judge him myself but the consensus is that he could either be really good or really average.

A top 10 player should not be that kinda risk but I'm sure with Rivera being a defensive guy I'm sure he'll know whether to draft him or not.

1st round David DeCastro OG- hurney said we would go with the best player and he migtht be it at 8

2nd round Bacarri Rambo FS- we need a ballhawking FS and Martin just isn't cutting it

4th round Nigel Bradham OLB- had a great bowl game and could develop into a starter depending on the TD situation

5th round Cam Johnson DE- good edge rusher we could stand to add some speed to our pass rush

6th round Mike Martin DT- probably won't last until the 6th round buy watching him in his bowl game shows how good he is against the run and just eats up blocks

    • They can get film of all the games? Every team? Wow! Who knew… Our games with them are big examples of why they are in  the CB market so hard.   It is the study they do getting ready for the games.  Preparing to play against is a little different than just analyzing film in scout mode. Deeper dive. Then you are analyzing post game too.  This goes to why players often change teams but stay in the division. The opponents know each other on a higher level.  Plus if you lost to us, you used to get fired. Now you have to trade your first round pick. Moving up on the world.
    • I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).
    • It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
