Should we spend a high pick on a DT?

Who here thinks that it's that dire of a need, the defensive tackles weren't terrible at the end of the year, Ron Edwards coming back and McClain and Fua will have a year to improve(hopefully). Maybe add a lower level free agent like Pat Sims could make it a solid group. There will be better value at the 8/9 spot

Hopefully we'll sign Soliai from Miami or Garay from SD during free agency. Even though I know JR said that we won't sign any big name free agents, which I don't really believe. That way we can focus on something else besides DT during the draft. Personally I want a CB.

What I'm trying to say is I'd rather go through FA then reach for a need with a top 10 pick

these website rankings are not only amateur projections on how good a player is, they're also extremely general (every team's big board is different). Players that would only project to a 3-4 are going to be valued more by 3-4 teams for example.

Last year drafttek said we were reaching on Cam like 15 spots. Regardless of ranking if you know one pick you have is going to be your last chance at getting someone you value you're going to want to take it. If we scout Brockers and our guys conclude that this guy has the skill set and work ethic to be an all-pro they'll take him, just like they did with Cam.

It sure isnt a very sexy pick is it? i dont know yet but if we want an elite line we have to draft some high level prospects.

Going through free agency would only get us mediocre players. If you want the big names you gotta dish out the big bucks and thats not something we want to do. This team doesnt need anymore "depth" guys we have those. We need playmakers doesnt matter what position, whoever is the best available at the time on defense.

I disagree with only finding mediocre players, Sims, Jason jones, garay are all good players and have shown it on the NFL level. They won't cost too much either

Edwards is coming off a serious injury especially for a player at his position and may not come back as he good as he was or hoped to be. Plus he's a run stopper not a pass rusher.

If Brockers has an excellent combine, he should be our pick hands down. Other than him, if our draft pick is not Kalil/Blackmon/Claiborne, our pick will be a reach regardless.

Its hard to define a reach regardless pre-combine, pre-senior bowl, pre-pretty much everything except bowl games

Brockers is a monster, but please look at Tampa before you insist we should get a DT/D-line early in the draft. Sometimes it works, but 7 times it just doesn't. You really need to be dead sure on the prospect before you take him for the d-line. I do like taking Brockers 1st and a DB (Minnifield or Hosley/Casey Hayward) in the 2nd/4th. I think it would be better to wait on recievers for next year, when some gamebreakers come out like Robert Woods.

So, yeah, I guess we should go for a DT early, but we need to be sure before we grab, or we'll end up like TB, with a bunch of high D-line picks and no production.
