Panthers Free Agents 2012

Dan Connor: Obviously we are going to try and keep Dan Connor and the Panthers will make an offer to him but it will be a minimal to average offer for his services. Another team will most certainly outbid us for his services.

Hangartner, Schwartz, and Bernadeau: I would keep all of the linemen (Hangartner, Schwartz, and Bernadeau) because it would really limit the possibility of having to use a draft pick on a linemen. Hangman and Schwartz are average starters and Bernadeau is a serviceable backup and can play well at times. I say keep all of them. Some may look at the roster as is and think that we don't need Bernadeau or Hangartner, but I would take those two over Roger Allen, Byron Bell, and Bryant Browning any day of the week.

Legedu Naanee: Naanee had a decent run here (I guess you could say), but his service are no longer needed with Brandon LaFell's sudden emergence, David Gettis's return from injury, and Kealoha Pilares increased role. I would most certainly expect Seyi Ajirotutu, Darvin Adams, and even Armanti Edwards (assuming we draft a wide receiver or bring in a wide receiver through free agency) joining Naanee on the unemployment list as well.

Antwan Applewhite: Applewhite is a must have, him and Keiser played really well while giving Hardy and Johnson periods of rest. The Panthers will probably add another defensive end in the draft or in free agency (maybe it's Jyles Tucker) so that the Panthers can move Eric Norwood back to linebacker or release him.

Jason Phillips and Thomas Williams: Neither of these guys impressed me and being that linebacker is a need for the Panthers, they will most likely try to bolster the position instead of standing pat and keeping the players that were part of the corp last year.

Omar Gaither: Gaither has to be retained because he is an above average backup and a very serviceable starter. Also being that the only players that I could possibly see contributing on the active roster consist of Jon Beason, Thomas Davis, James Anderson, Jason Williams, Jordan Senn, and possibly Eric Norwood; I would say Gaither is a must have. I suspect the Panthers will address the linebacker position in the draft (possibly in the fourth round) with the taking of an outside linebacker.

Jeremy Shockey: Shockey is a must have. He, Olsen, and Barnidge will form an amazing tight end tandem this coming year. That's really all I have to say about that.

Derek Anderson: Anderson really helped Newton mature this year and I would like to see him back unless the coaching staff already feels comfortable enough to look for a backup whose skill set and ability is closer to Cam's so if need be they can come in and still keep the Panthers competitive without us having to adjust to a different style of play.

Cletis Gordan: You don't replace suck with suckier. Cornerback is obviously a position of need. Gamble is a great cornerback and Hogan will most likely be a good cornerback, Butler, Munnerlyn, and Stanford are decent to serviceable nickel-backs, but the Panthers still lack another "great" cornerback.

Schwartz is an interesting situation. If the Panthers go with a low tender, 7th round, a few teams may be interested but his injury may scare them off. One thing that may hurt his chances of being pursued is the draft is very deep with talented OG guys in the middle rounds so many teams will fill their needs there.

Pilares had 0 catches so what increased role are you referring to?

He will receive an increased role, if he had 0 catches; he will obviously have an increased role unless he somehow manages to get -1 catches.

But in all seriousness, his role will increase by simply being on the field at the wide out position not just as a kick returner.
