Do you/Did you smoke cigarettes?

If you smoke are you trying to quit or have you ever tried to quit?

If you quit smoking, how long has it been since you quit?

How long did you smoke?

What has been the hardest thing to deal with when quitting?

I quit 5.5 years ago. I still think about it on occasion. I wonder if that goes away.

Maybe this thread could be useful those of you who want to quit and stay that way.

I quit on Christmas Day 2010, so it's been almost 14 months. Started smoking when I was 17 and smoked around 10-15 per day for 11 years.

I tried to quit four times before I was successful. Every time I tried to quit I could get down to one cigarette a day, but could never get over the hump. I had no intention of quitting 14 months ago...circumstances are actually pretty funny. I was so hungover the day after Christmas that I had no motivation to leave my fifth floor condo and walk downstairs to smoke. Around 7:00pm I realized that I hadn't smoked. Made it through the night, woke up the next morning, and thought to myself "Well, you've never made it 24 hours before." I had no intention of quitting that day. I just knew that I had always failed at getting to that 24 hour point in five previous attempts, so I just kept it up.

Edit: Cravings still pop up from time to time - once a month or so - but are gone within a few minutes. If I justified having one for a special occasion, I'd start justifying it all the time.

Never.

I grew up with a smoking dad and I worked in tobacco as a kid. I've probably primed more tobacco than any one smoker has smoked in a lifetime (hmm...would have to run numbers on that one).

Hated it then...hate it now. Never smoked, dipped, chewed, anything. Waking up a 5am...in the field at 6am...only get to get wet from the dew and get covered by a mixture of black sticky crap and sand was enough to tell me I never wanted to put that crap in my lungs.

I smoked from 16-25, the most that I ever smoked on a regular basis was around a pack a day. I quit when I found out that I was going to be a dad, a little over three years ago. It wasn't all that hard for me. The hardest part was not smoking while drinking, but I forced myself to go out with smokers while I was drinking so that I could make myself refuse to smoke. It didn't take long to get used to not smoking while drinking.

I smoked for 18 years. Started off with regulars and was smoking menthols when I quit.

Made the decision to quit on Oct 25, 2003. Stopped on the way home from work and bought a box of patches. Smoked my last cig the next day and was off the patches a week later.

For the longest time the hardest thing was getting on the phone. That and a couple other things were huge triggers for me but by and large I really wanted to quit so nothing was real hard. Since it wasn't one of those "I need to quit, but don't really want to" things it all went pretty smooth.

I coughed like mad for about a month but once that passed Ive never really looked back.

edit:

I was a 2-2.5 pack a day guy when I quit. Some days it might jump to 3+ if I was doing certain things.

I started smoking when I was 13. Having an occasional cigarette is not an option for me. It took me almost 3 years of trying to figure out I can't stop at one. I was a 1.5-2 pack a day smoker.

The last straw was when I had not smoked for a whole year and I went to visit family in FL. I bummed one while I was there and I ended up buying a pack by the end of the day and a carton after 2 days. I smoked like I had never quit.

On my trip back home I had tremendous guilt over it because I had struggled so hard to quit for 2 years prior and I was proud of the fact I had one year of being smoke free but because of one decision it was ruined. From that moment I decided I could never smoke another cigarette ever again. It just wasn't possible for this person.

I can say nothing bad about my decision to quit. Best thing I've ever done.
