PFF: Who is Cam Newton (more fantasy but interesting stats)

PFF changed their QB rating system halfway through the season and Newton was one of the most-affected QBs by the change. Scores from the first several weeks were retroactively changed to reflect the new system. It's very bizarre to see them change their ratings system in the middle of the season, and then draw narratives from their numbers after the season like there was never a change. ("He had more games with a negative PFF passing grade than positive", but only after like week 9 when they changed it) The only acknowledgement of this change was in a short blog post where they explained that some of the passing scores were, to paraphrase, "getting out of control." eh, that is less than convincing objectivity if you ask me. I'm all for a stats analysis service adapting to new realities and tweaking their evaluation criteria, but I'm gonna reserve the right to step away when it feels flimsy.

I am probably going to take the 2012 season off from subscribing to them because I really don't trust that they know what they're doing yet with the ratings system.

Interesting read... so as a passer he's very comparable to Big Ben (in terms of production). Not bad for a rookie compared to an 8 year vet. It's funny because I remember pre-draft that Warren Moon said Cam was "Big Ben, with a spoiler".

Ben had a much better passer rating according to PFF's calculation, but his INT's were the big difference in that and I think many if not all of Cam's INT's this year could be chalked up to the rookie learning curve.

If he can have similar production this year and reduce the INT's... watch out.

if we somehow don't pull off the #1 overall and/or don't get harbaugh as coach, sure i would go after newton. i'd probably be looking at a HC that would be more interested in just letting newton play and trust his instincts. the dude has mammoth potential in the league. he reminds me of big ben except mobile.

What makes Cam special is versatility. The ability to force a team to drop the extra man in the box due to his triple threat ability is something unique. There's never been an athlete at QB like Newton, top 5 power arm, improving accuracy, top 2 speed QB and top 5 size. It should also be noted that Chud has done a fantastic job utilizing our talents on offense.

    • Well if we are being realistic doesn't what you just lined out already tell us where we are at? If the rookie UDFA kicker was the savior more often than not and we had a bottom 5 offense despite us having a #1 pick behind center who was billed predraft as a mini Payton Manning is that just going to magically change trajectory overnight with a tougher schedule added in? If we are going to repeat as division champions then it will be with the defense doing the heavy lifting. So keep adding to it.
    • Everyone keeps arguing all these teams have great TE's that made them successful. THATS BS! What makes those teams great is QB play and we don't have that. So again even getting a NON-INLINE TE who can run a fast 40 time isnt going to get us anywhere without competent QB play consistently. Which we don't have by a long shot. So honestly all these great teams have a TE argument doesnt hold water to me.  Mahomes would be nasty without Kelce, Lamar would blow you away without Andrews, does it help? of course any weapon will help but only if you have someone making those correct reads week to week. When we have that then I'd be all in on a game breaking TE but unfortunately we are stuck with one of the most inconsistent starting QB's currently in the NFL.  Not to mention all the TE's mentioned are COMPLETE TE's not just a receiving threat with drop issues which Sadiq does. Argue all you want but nothing will change that fact other than getting a consistent QB week to week in a Panthers uniform which doesnt seem to be happing anytime soon.
    • They don't have guidelines for hand size for the backup QB.
