The New York Giants have told running back Brandon Jacobs that he will be released, according to a league source on Friday.

Jacobs had said in February that he was open to restructuring his contract to stay with the Giants but acknowledged that the team might release him.

Jacobs was scheduled to receive a $500,000 roster bonus this month and a $4.4 million salary next season.

Jacobs, 29, won two Super Bowl rings with the Giants, the latest coming this past season after he rushed for 571 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games. He was the team's regular starter in 2008 and 2009, but he became a backup after Ahmad Bradshaw's emergence.

Giants may be in the market for a running back. I would hate to lose Stewart but this may be the opportunity. Maybe even DWill.

Nah, Giants have had success plugging in RB's without having to pay much for them. They will just use a mid round draft pick to get another one in April

anyone could really

The Giants don't just know a magical secret for getting less talented backs to produce for them

The Giants value O and D lineman....we value RBs and LBs

dude i can't wait to see the egg on your face when we extend Stewart instead of using money to shore up the important positions and our 80 million dollar backfield accounts for 1400 rushing yards in 2013

    • Kalkbrenner and Sion James received regular contracts and not two ways, so the Hornets have some work to do to cut the roster size down.
    • Gustavsson would be insane. I think we would have to break the bank to afford that move. Which, I don't think is necessarily a bad idea. Ultimately, Freddie isn't likely to be around more than a couple of seasons more. We can all agree that unless they have a fleet of sports psychologists working on Kochetkov, he will never be capable of getting his head on straight enough to compete.
    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
