Colston deal done

That's too much.

Word was that GMs were wary of Colston because they viewed him as a product of the system and thought he'd fade in a different offense. Possible he may not have received that great an offer from anyone else.

Good possibility the Saints just outbid themselves.

Agree. I would have let him smell the market. I have viewed him as a good but not great WR. Not a game breaker.

This could have been a bit of an olive branch to Drew though.

Saints were sitting at about 6 mil under, and now they've signed Colston to a 5 year, 19 mil contract, and Nicks wants more than 8.5 a year

Yeah, its not happening

This s from 1 minute ago:

The New Orleans Saints and Marques Colston have agreed to a five-year deal, the team announced Tuesday.

The move takes one of New Orleans' high-profile free agents off the market with just a few hours to go before free agency begins at 3 p.m.

All-Pro left guard Carl Nicks is still mulling a contract the Saints offered him Monday night.

But that leaves the Saints with a number of unsigned free agents and in a year when they'll be hamstrung during the signing period thanks to being only $6 million under the cap, the next few days could be a bit volatile.

Nicks is next, he was made a "respectable" deal and will hopefully sign it soon!

He will shop it to the rest of the league. No reason to sign now unless they pay him as the highest guard in the league. He is being told by everyone to get a big commitment elsewhere and use it for leverage against the Saints to get more money.

Add that Brees is only counting 15 million with the tag and he says he won't play for less than 23. If you spend that on Colston or Nicks you have to make more cuts in order to sign him or risk he walks after week 10.

If they didnt pay Colston they wouldnt have any credibility to sign anyone else. Moss took a sniff and went running. No other wr in the league is gonna sign with the sinking ship saints.

Moss worked out for Saints and wasn't offered a contract, how is that running away? I mean was he supposed to camp out in New Orleans with no offer from Saints and sit outside the facility hoping they offered him something!? Epic Fail!

probably nicks and colston were both offered contracts at the same time and were told "whoever signs the deal first gets the money".

i'd be surprised if they offered both guys deals with the anticipation of being able to bring both guys back.

i think colston knew that the best place for him to get near the amount of money he wanted was with the saints because he mainly benefited from the system. the market was going to be limited by his limitations.

nicks is another case. he's a lot more marketable and a lot more valuable to more teams. he's got a lot more options than colston would have had.

but...but...the saints are America's team, I'm sure the NFL will let them go 10 million over the cap. Saints fans haven't let their lack of math skills keep them from what they wanted.

Slot receiver with very little speed.

Guy was 100% a product of Brees and the system. They could have replaced him with a mid round draft pick and not lost a beat.

 It said Epic Fail at the end. It uses words that are common in the social circles of 12 year olds.
