Scout On Coples

After viewing three game tapes of North Carolina DE Quinton Coples, former NFL scout Bryan Broaddus observed that Coples is an "outstanding athlete" with "model" dimensions for a 3-4 defensive end.

"When I worked for Bill Parcells," wrote Broaddus, "... this was the perfect height and weight that he wanted at end. The first guy that we were able to get like this was Chris Canty from Virginia." Coples (6'6/284) is "scheme versatile," which will help his draft stock. While Broaddus has "heard" that Coples' motor is inconsistent, that wasn't evident on tape against Virginia Tech. Broaddus expects Coples to be the first defensive end drafted this April.

Getting this guy would allow us to play multiple sets which Rivera loves to do. He did it a lot at San Diego if I remember correctly. This is a player in the mold of Mario Williams and we could have a chance to get him at #9. If this draft wasn't so stacked at the top with sure-thing QBs and OL then Coples would be a guaranteed top 5 pick with his versatility.

i agree. every time somebody brings up the motor issue, i respond with go watch the Va Tech game. he balled out that thur night. Maybe the light went off in his head, being he was playing RE and not LE or DT, and it took him some time to get adjusted to playing in a new position. he caught Wilson from behind 10-15 yards down field off a dump pass.

It is entirely possible that with changing coaches and positions his final 2 years could explain the lack of motor.I guess we will let the team decide that.I don't think there is a doubt that he has the physical attributes and ability to be pretty special

This is all well and good, but will he be there at #9? The Jags could pick him up, so could the Dolphins. Who knows, maybe he's a surprise pick from the top 5 teams? Everything is so uncertain.

Dolphins HAVE to take a QB and that QB is Tannenhill, I fill that the Jags may take Ingram or Reiff. They need protect Gabbert.

Um, from what I'm reading, The browns may just pull the trigger on Tannenhill. As far as the Phins, No QB there, they would probably go O line, you never know, could take Coples. The Jags may take ingram or Coples. Gabbert is trash. Why would you protect trash? They tried to get The Golden Calf of Bristol for pete's sake. I don't believe they will emphasize on protecting Gabbert. They could go pass rush.

They only went after The Golden Calf of Bristol for ticket sales, Gabbert had a horrible year, but you can't really blame him given that offensive line, and the coaching situation. If Browns take Tannenhill then that just means another player will fall for Dolphins or Jags to take.

The thing about drafting Coples is simple. He can play both DT and DE. He would mainly play DE and would give us a heck of a DE tandem in Johnson and Coples. We wouldnt have to worry about DE for a while with those 2 guys, Hardy and Keiser.

Hopefully Ron Edwards comes back fine, and Fua and McClain improves(yes it could happen). Then we could also restructure some deals and go after Garay. Draft some depth at LB and at CB and defense would be much improved

Johnson, Edwards, Garay, Coples - Dline

Beason, Anderson, Davis - LB

Gamble, Godfrey, Martin or Nakomura(sp?), Munnerlyn/Butler/Hogan/draft pick

Much much better defense on paper.

    • They are 1 and 9 against the  Bucs in the past 10 games. the Panthers go as young goes.  QB1 ‘s are suppose to dictate and overcome  and elevate Everything the QB does affects every part of the team and Bryce is uneven. Canales and Bryce have  an uneven relationship too  as for Evero, the only thing that might save him is the injury to Baker’s left shoulder and oline injuries. I don’t even know how he is out there   I really feel their season ended last Sunday Canales’ division record isn’t great   Getting owned by the Saints and Bucs isn’t a good look
    • Frankly surprised by the amount of people that want to hang Evero. This was a defense that was almost universally considered the bottom of the barrel before this season started. We’ve managed to stat our way to the middle of the pack whatever that means. Those critical of the zone schemes, what do you want? When even JC is getting burnt one on one by Olave you have little choice. There definitely have been moments where the zone blitz stuff has bit us. That said, are the third string linebackers (and nick Scott) covering poo anyway? This unit had only conceded 10 points going into the fourth quarter despite a litany of bullshit penalties on both sides. Them over performing is the biggest reason we are still in playoff contention.
