Seems like now Coach Fox is now known for his flexibility in the national media :o . So the question is, what was stopping the flexibility while he was our coach? The players, the coaching or the ownership?

John Fox is still stubborn. If we had Peyton Manning here while Fox coached the team, we would have thrown the ball plenty. He's not a complete idiot, he just prefers old school football.

Also it's not like he had a choice in the matter. Elway probably told him they were signing Manning and the offense was now Manning's.

He had orton and ran a boring conservative offense, he switched to The Golden Calf of Bristol and ran a boring conservative offense. The only difference is now he is smart enough to let peyton play and not mess with it. I bet he would have done that here if we had gotten Peyton. Doesn't seem like anythings changed.

JR is just as stubborn as Fox. It just wasn't a great combo here. He's a good coach. I wish him the best with Peyton running the show. Hopefully Rivera has the balls to tell JR some of his wants are outdated.

or not.. since JR was leading the charge in adapting this team to the new NFL..

Ownership and Management in my opinion. I think Fox is fairly conservative but it's amplified when you have a conservative owner and GM. They were bad for each other.

Or....he had more say here where in Denver Elway runs that ship.

In all honesty I liked how Fox ran a team when he got here. Using vet players and peppering in Rookies that deserved the Job. Its was a system that got us to the Super Bowl. Still after a few years he became more and more attached to his Vets while forgeting to pepper in the young players. I think the ownership got tired of that and thats why we are in total reverse. I just hope one day we make it back to using both Vets and young players.

You're all way off, and I have to wonder how much attention you actually pay to what went on here.

Does Fox rely on a very conservative offense? Yes. But, really, he never had the kind of QB that would allow him to run anything else. Delhomme was perfect for a limited run-first offense, and we won games that way, but he wasn't Peyton Manning. Neither was Moore, or Clausen, or Orton or The Golden Calf of Bristol. Peyton can actually run a pass-first offense, so it's not as if Fox magically decided to be onboard with it. He knows what he can or can't work with, hence his extreme offensive training wheels he had to conjure up to keep The Golden Calf of Bristol upright, or the creative packages he ran against Atlanta the seaosn Delhomme was out and we had to bring in frickin' Vinny Testaverde.

On the flip side, we needed a change here. Rivera is much more risk/reward oriented and will not be afraid to let his offense try to win a game rather than hope to avoid losing it, and he has his franchise QB that Fox would have killed for once Jake was done.

I am personally glad that Fox was not our coach when we decided to take a franchise-altering gamble and select Cam, because Fox would not have been invested in it the way Rivera is and would have been content to bring Cam along way too slowly, whereas Rivera wants to put him on the fast track to dominance. It worked out OK for everyone involved, Fox included.

    • Who is comparing the two QB’s as football players? They’re completely different QB’s i said before Baker got here that he could play but the huddle swore up and down he was the worst ever  Bryce very similar right now. Bryce out there with a bunch of guys that’ll be out of the league in a few years minus TMac. And given this thread is about the 4th and 1 play specifically well it was actually TMac that butchered the entire play by running the wrong route
    • Team goes as the QB goes. It's no wonder we get dogwalked on a regular basis. That's the face of the franchise.
    • Rookie 2nd rounder in his first career game (and a few weeks post punctured lung) gets 6 snaps, is doubled on 5 of them, created a pressure to force a QB scramble on the only one he was singled, and still put a little pressure on one of the doubles which ended up being an INT........... And people look at that as a bad first impression? Even if you wanted to see a better move to beat or get off the double team, just the fact that he's making teams account for him with 2 players on a given snap, is a win for the defense.  It's up to the rest of the defense to make the other team pay for doing so, you can't fault him for that. Seriously, it's like some people are just going to be upset with everything if we're not a SB contender every season and play like it every snap of every game.  I've been screaming it all offseason, we're not a player or two away from being a contender, we're still in the early phase of a re-build, especially if we don't have the QB (spoiler alert, we don't).   Sometimes you just have to see potential and growth from a team at this phase of the process, expecting elite play in week 1 out of guys like Scourton is a picture perfect recipe for ending up upset. If that's what he does in his first game coming off the freak injury and less practice time while recovering, I'm extremely optimistic of what he can turn into with more experience and time to work on his craft.
