Greg Olsen's Deal Restructured

By Pat Yasinskas:

The deal was done several weeks ago, but I haven’t seen it reported anywhere. The Panthers have made other moves since Olsen’s restructure and they currently are the only team in the NFL with less than $1 million in salary-cap space.

The Panthers dropped Olsen’s salary-cap figure from $4.125 million to $2.4 million by converting $2.3 million of his scheduled base salary into a signing bonus that will be pro-rated over the life of his contract. The Panthers also converted a $2.5 million option bonus into a signing bonus that also will be pro-rated over the rest of Olsen’s contract.

Yet another reason why I'm not worried about the cap. I'd expect plenty of this throughout the offseason.

Pushing money to the future doesn't get rid of bad decisions in the past. Call me whatever you want for not being happy with being at the bottom (if not the very bottom) of the league in cap situation.

Any news if Gross was actually restructured or not? We need to extend Smitty too. Interesting how Yas said it was done several weeks ago. The Panthers org is so tight lipped, I wouldn't doubt if we have a lot more cap room than what is being reported.

Who said anything about that? We're talking about the cap and nothing else.

It's better than a franchise that saves up a huge chunk of cap space then spends it all on 2 overrated players.

You can be a fan of the Redskins if you want. Don't be ashamed.

We restructured his deal and still have the least cap in the NFL?

This has been going on for ever in the NFL. Nothing new and nothing to worry about.

Sure, we can manipulate the cap we don't have right now. But if they wouldn't have overpaid in the first place, they wouldn't have to restructure.

Well that is also true to. But it happens even to the best of teams. Redskins are a great example of overing paying a player that ain't worth crap. Fat Albert would be his name. :)

And yet again, no one is denying that. We are talking about worrying about the cap number itself. How it got like that is a different discussion.

You guys just like arguing about Marty Hurney, and im not going to do it.

    • Jack Roslovic: Only 2 other UFA, right-handed centers age 28 or under had more points (39) than him- Sam Bennett (51) and Pius Suter (46). There were 4 other centers age 33 and older who scored more: Gireaux (37), Marchand (37), Tavares (34), Granlund (33).  Unless the Canes go old, if they let Jack walk, they won't get a center who scored more.  Thoughts?
    • nope     This is why we come back every year.  Hope springs eternal
    • It's important to differentiate criticism and hate. I can't speak for that individual you quoted. But most people who have been critical of the Tepper's have been so because both of them have made it a point to put themselves front and center and in the middle of team operations and we have been largely horrific more often than not as a result. If people are making derogatory remarks about her that should be met with an appropriate response but if people are being defensive just because she's being criticized all I can say is people should get used to it. Both her and David would have been getting absolutely skewered by the media and the fans if this were a big market franchise. The Lakers are finally being sold off after years and years of public criticism of Jeannie Buss and even though I'm the furthest you could go from being a Lakers fan just about anyone you could meet who is familiar with the NBA would say the criticism was certainly valid.
