Best Drafting Teams

I really really really thought it was obvious that I was speaking more about recent drafts. Does it really matter which teams have better drafts up to a decade ago? I'm more interested about what we're doing now. From what I've seen lately it's been pretty okay. I don't see where people get off saying it's above average.

People say it takes three years to truly judge a draft so 2010-11 can't be judged yet. So I would think 2000-2009 would be a better time frame than just the last 5 years. Also Williams was drafted a year before Beason so it's stupid not to include him on the list as well

Increasing the time frame simply extends the list to include 1st round picks and Smitty, and nobody else. I think that kind of rating would only be good for the "Which team has the greatest home runs in the draft" list. I'm more interested in how we're doing now for entire drafts, rather than 1st rounders only. I don't see why not.

To be fair, Hurney didn't draft Smith. Smith was drafted by a completely different front office.

I wasn't specifically talking about Hurney, just players drafted by the team.

Wharton, Anderson, Charles Johnson (same year as Beason)? I think Floppin called you stupid because he wasn't aware you were just talking about recently but even then you still left out players

You just left off quite a few quality players from even the recent drafts. I'm sorry I called you stupid, but it's a "make a stupid statement and get a stupid response" type thing.

The problem with most fans is that they don't really follow any team, other than theirs, really closely. You know all of Hurney's draft miscues, but do you know all the other teams' as intimately? Can you name all the other big wiffs by other teams outside of the first round? Probably not. If you do take the time to look at all the players drafted by the panthers, while Hurney has been a GM, and find all players drafted that ended up as at least quality starters and compare it to other teams drafts, you will find that Hurney and the Panthers are very much above average.

Hurney has been average man. Let it go. Teams that go 2-14 and then 6-10 aren't stocked with super stars.

The whole 2007 draft was very good.

2008 was only average Stewart was top 15 and should be as good as he is. We blatantly overpaid for otah. Looks even worse because now that he doesn't really seem interested in getting healthy.

2009 was really bad, the first two picks look very wasteful.

2010 was back to average. Barely, borderline bad. Clausen looks like a waste. As does Edwards. Both receivers look like they will contribute though. Hardy looks solid.

2012 too early to tell.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
