Jacoby Jones Visiting Panthers

Recommended Posts

I would feel about the way I did last year when we signed Naanee. Meh. Would've helped on special teams this year and shored up any competition and faltering with our WR's, but I'm not losing any sleep over it. Personally, if we're gonna bring in a WR, I'd rather it be Edwards or Burress.... those 2 would make more of an offensive impact and help Cam out more than Jones.

Why bring in a guy to compete if we already have the same guy on the roster?

You don't have the same guy on the roster, because you don't know how good David Gettis will be this season. Besides, if that "kind of receiver" is a good kind, there's nothing wrong with having two of them.

LaFell is a better Jones is the point I was making and IF Jones was signed he would be fourth string or fight Gettis for third.

Can he play slot or is he more of a deep threat WR?

I'd put him at slot receiver myself, but Chudzinski's offense allows for some flexibility so I could see using him deep. You can go deep to guys lined up in the lot (works well on seam routes).

Not so certain that decision will be needed, though. At least not with this team.

No you need a possession receiver beside Smith.

Smith is already a deep threat.

If you want smith, a 5'8.5", 33-year old slot WR as your lone option as a deep threat in a Chud offense, then you are right, but it has never been done that way unless options were limited. He can continue to fight off double teams as they roll the S over to his side as they have. However, the more you become familiar with this form of offense, you will see that tall, physical WRs that are deep threats are best. A posession WR, if that is what you mean by, #2 WR, needs to have size and a deep threat capability to keep the safeties honest and to make blitzing a riskier proposition. A third WR is the possession WR, because the safeties are occupied. Not to say that there are no variations that have a short deep threat and a slower possession WR on the other side, but everything I have read about this offense suggests that two, tall deep threats open things up for the TE, run game, and takes double teaming options away from the #1 WR. Gettis, therefore, is a better fit at #2 than Lafell. He is 6'4" and runs a 4.35. I think we will run more 3-WR sets than we are both used to, so this is a bit pf a moot point. However, we cannot count on SS being the only deep threat. In reality, he should be a slot WR and nothing more. He would be better there than he is now.

Smith is already a deep threat.

Here is what I found that describes the Coryell philosophy:

Overall the goal of the Coryell offense is to have at least two downfield, fast wide receivers who adjust to the deep pass very well, combined with a sturdy pocket quarterback with a strong arm. The Coryell offense uses three key weapons. The first is a strong inside running game, the second is its ability to strike deep with two or more receivers on any play, and the third is to not only use those two attack in cooperation with each other, but to include a great deal of mid-range passing to a TE, WR, or back.

I have read this in several places before, but this is the best source that summarizes it.
