In An Article Titled "which Nfl Teams Got Worse This Offseason?"...

The Panthers are mentioned...:

Yesterday, we stopped lamenting the end of the NFL's acquisition season by detailing how 10 teams had sufficiently upgraded their weakest spots in the lineup. Plaudits were handed out, compliments were given, and we even found a nice thing to say about the Browns taking a running back third overall. All in all, it was a day of high praise.

Today, though, brings the natural counter to that piece: the 10 teams who failed to address their biggest holes this offseason.

Carolina Panthers

Hole Remaining: Wide Receiver

As is their custom, the Panthers made another one of their veterans feel at home with a massive contract extension, thanks to the new deal Steve Smith got in April. What they left undone for yet another year, though, is the question of who will benefit from the combination of Smith and Cam Newton in 2012. The Panthers hope that it's Brandon LaFell, who caught 36 passes and scored three times last year, but LaFell works best as a matchup problem for undersized defensive backs and might not be a complete receiver. The Panthers may also hope that David Gettis recovers well from his torn ACL, but it's a shame that the Panthers didn't take a flyer on any veteran wideouts in free agency.

I've never heard of this "Grantland" website, but it was linked from the ESPN NFL main page. They seriously thought a #2 WR was our biggest hole? That's gotta be the most ridiculous claim I've heard about the Panthers this entire offseason...sure we don't have a concrete proven #2 right now, but we're far better at WR than DT or CB, that's for sure. Lafell and Gettis have proven more than Hogan and Norman and Butler...

I agree too much again is on Smith shoulders. He is too big of a piece to the passing puzzle.

We still don't have our talent on offense distributed well. Lot is talented guys will be on the sidelines since they are runners

Can Smith continue at the level he showed last year? Will Gettis be 100% and can he be as good as some of us think he can? Will Lafell continue to improve as he did last year? And will Olsen and Barnidge be a good pair at TE? The receiving corps does have some questions, but if all or even most of them get answered in the affirmative, we should be in pretty good shape.

    • And, yes, I've been a slow boil, but watching continually watching shitty displays of football for weeks has me frustrated.
    • Bryce just didn't maximize Hunter Renfrow's skills. ***rant incoming*** But this isn't just about Bryce Young mistiming passes to Renfrow so bad that he's going to get Renfrow killed or hurt, this is also about incompetentence by Dave Canales. Renfrow can still play. He's putting DBs in a blender out there---making them play twister at the top of routes to keep up with him, and dumb Dave has the nerve to cut him. How about putting Hunter in the best position to help the damned offense by appreciating his skill set, DC? You're letting Bryce's apparent inability to make an accurate throw, or at least his timidity to push the ball down the damned field cloud your judgment and miscalculate talent---or maybe just miss on talent just as much as Bryce misses passes due to playing pussified football. It's fúcking unacceptable.  Speaking of misjudgment, I don't know if it's Dan Morgan or Canales, but Eijiro Evero is not the business at DC. I have said a few times that his scheme is not conducive to run-stopping efficiency. Hell, and after watching some clips of plays, now I absolutely know why. The gaps are at least half open before the play even fúcking starts. You are setting the opposition's RBs up for success with too much damned space at the line and in the second level. If our guys are taken out in these areas---at the line and in the second level---then the defense is screwed because it must rely on the safeties to cover too much ground to make the tackle. At least put Ransom in who is motivated to seek and destroy if you're going to effectively leave the safeties on an island.  And speaking of rookies, get our two new defensive ends more snaps to see if we can't generate more of a pass rush. For all the good the continued sorry display of defense that you're putting out for fan's to see (Ejiro, Dave and Dan), you may as well get the rookies generously involved. Fúck that money we gave second-rate (maybe second-rate) vets, we need a damned spark getting after the QB. Watch it, it's just another breakdown of the sh¡t we were subjected to last week. I say this with all respect: Fúck you, Dave! Fúck you, Dan! Learn how to run a fúcking franchise. Maximize the players, regardless of what you think you're supposed to do by the book. Cut the dead weight before another season is lost and fans lose interest in September. EE is "Ew!" Or for emphasis "EEw!" /end rant
    • But nobody is saying he is a good deep ball passer.  But the facts are since he's returned from his benching, he has been throwing downfield.  Whether you want to credit the scheme, Bryce himself, or whatever, he has been pushing it deep.  Not to any positive results mind you, but it has been happening.
