Meeks and defense

For those of you who think we'll be doing what the Colts did for the last few years, I have to disagree. What have we learned about the panthers in the last few years? That Fox is a coach that likes to have it his way. Not saying that he's an egotistical bastard, but he has his formula and he sticks to it.

Remember when we apparently changed to the zone blocking scheme and we were expecting what the falcons were running in the vick era? Yeah, didn't really happen. We still ran a power scheme 80% of the time. I believe it will be the same with Meeks and the Tampa 2. We might run a bit more cover 2, we might have smaller pass rushers, but at the end of the day, I can't see a dramatic change in defensive philosophy as long as Fox is here.

With this in mind, should we really be judging Martin and Brown purely as Tampa 2 players? Should we even assume that our LB's will be player more zone? I really don't think so guys. Fox will largely stick to his formula and any projections that we make should be based on that.

While I don't think Panthers will have a Ditka & Ryan situation.

I do think they will have a Fox & Del Rio.

Meeks may run a Hybird of what he ran with COLTS,but Meeks will run the defense .

Fox now has a new OC and new DC along with some new position coaches.

This should help Fox delagate more and work on the overall instead of spending most of his time in one or two areas

I think John got fed up with the whole staff. He is ultimately responsible for running this team the way he discussed it with Richardson.

Now that said, I think he has discussed our situation with Ron Meeks and has given him alot of slack to run the defensive team the way he sees fit. I think you are going to see a much better defense and with our offense control most games we are in.

I agree and I think it will help with in game adjustments. Somethings might not work this year but Meeks is smart enough to adjust to whats happening in the game. This will give fox more time to practice his clapping and patting players on there back.

Looking at player acquisition (draft and undrafted) can give a clue here.

They're definitely acquiring players that would fit the kind of system Meeks prefers. That would make me think there's going to be some flexibility from Fox.

that's what i'm thinking. meeks also garners more respect as a DC than trgo did coming in. i think the level of trust fox has in meeks will be greater than what he had in trgo.

Like Scot said, taking a look at the player's we've acquired we'll be running the Tampa 2 System here next year. This is Meek's defense now and will be until he screws up.

The Martin pick is a perfect example of this, he's a Tampa 2 corner.

Also the Corey Irvin and Brown picks give you some insight as well, both being smaller speed style rushing players and both will get some good playing time this coming season. Brown in Particular will get a lot of chances and will fit in with Meeks style perfectly.

I really think this indicated that Fox steadily lost confidence and trust in Trgo's playcalling which led to more input in defensive meetings and playcalling. I don't foresee a simiar problem with Meeks. The organization appears to be pretty excited about what Meeks brings to the table, and I think Fox will give him leeway to run the defense to the best of his capabilities. I also think Fox is looking forward to stepping back a bit to focus more on his overall responsibilities as Head Coach, but this is JMO.
