Beason makes splash in return to practice

Panthers middle linebacker Jon Beason was back on the field Tuesday and back in the middle of the action.

Participating in team drills for the first time this spring following Achilles surgery last fall, Beason intercepted a Cam Newton pass during 11-on-11 work near the end of the Panthers' first minicamp practice.

Beason, who ruptured his left Achilles in Week 1 last season, was limited to individual drills and installation walk-throughs during the three weeks of organized team activities (OTAs) practices.

“It was good to see him moving around,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said.

“Really, the biggest thing was just his conditioning. He was winded. He's done all the installation stuff. But he was out there. And you could see he had a little adrenaline rush going. He was all fired up to get that last extra set of reps. He (asked) out just because he was gassed.”

Beason made a nice read on his interception of Newton, who was throwing down the middle of the field.

“A natural play,” Rivera said. “Somebody else might not make that play. But I think guys with his kind of his experience and his kind of ability make that. And that's what he saw. He made a nice move on the ball and a nice play.”

While Beason returned, weakside linebacker Thomas Davis rode a stationary bike and did some leg-strengthening exercises before leaving practice early. Davis is attempting to become the first player in NFL history to return from three ACL surgeries on the same knee

.

Defensive end Charles Johnson (knee), defensive tackle Ron Edwards (biceps) and offensive tackle Jeff Otah (knee) all were held out.

Undrafted wideouts Brenton Bersin and Michael Avila are both sidelined with hamstring injuries.

Good to hear Beason is out there getting it done, I am very hopeful about his recovery.

What? Jeff Otah didn't practice? You're kidding!

He must of pulled a groin muscle straining on the toilet from the steady diet of Golden Corral and Filet-O-Fish he's been on the past two seasons.

Was wondering how long it would take for the first dumb post about Otah being fat and out of shape would be made.

Otah may be injury prone and even soft (not playing through pain). But the people making accusations that he is out of shape and over weight are way off base.

Yep.

Nothing suggests he is lazy.

Hey smartass if Otah doesn't get it together this season, the final year of his rookie contract, he never will. Even if he does have a good, healthy season for us this year the panthers would be damn fools to invest a ton of money in this guy.

Otah is just not a football player man.

I dont blame Otah.... not willing to play hurt is smart. We knew he didn't do that when we drafted him.

Players who don't give a fug about there health are great to have.... but the hate the big man recieves is a tad much

    • Most EVs are in the 90+ e-MPG meaning some measurement house somewhere compares the EV to a similar ICE model and works out how much is costs to charge (on average) versus fill up as a point of comparison. Talking long term, in the hundreds of thousands of miles?  No clue.  Some early signs are that EV batteries maintain 80% charge over 400k miles.  So there's that.   The challenge and charm of an ICE vehicle is being able to park it under a tree, get your jack stands out and tinker with your engine.  There's just not that same level of complexity in an EV.  I saw someone estimate there are 200 or so moving parts in an EV, and 2000 in an ICE vehicle.  I'm not a part counter so I can't really speak to that. I think that the EV is more the future than any type of combustion engine.  Those will still be around in specific purposes, but for most people - an EV will be the superior option in terms of efficiency.  I say that as someone who loves stupid horsepower numbers out of turbo 4 bangers and inline 6s...  I am one of those tinkers when I can be. A bigger issue for EVs is going to be the ownership versus lease.  Right now, there are INSANE leases on EVs, which is great, but what do you have at the end of that lease?  Nada, maybe some equity if you're lucky.  Where as I'm almost done paying for my car, and plan to keep it until the wheels fall off (or my son wrecks it when he starts to drive).  Will EV makers do the smartphone thing and build in planned obsolesce?  Stop updating software?  I love the tech in EVs, and I think getting more cars and trucks off the road is a good thing.  But I am still just a little concerned.  Capitalism has gotten far too extractive.
