How do you get the funk out of a vacuum cleaner?

My vacuum cleaner smell like a wet dog, how do you get the stench out? :wacko:

I helped a friend clean a rental property after teh tenet left- they left a nice vacuum behind. I needed one so I cleaned the crap out of that thing multiple times- you can perfume it, try to cover it up or make someone say gee whats that smell? - but youre only fooling yourself. stinky dog funk will NOT be defeated.

Use Arm & Hammer Pet Odor carpet powder every time you vacuum for a while, it'll take the smell out of your suckmachine.

How does it happen? Its not like I am vacuuming wet dog hair up....?

Get a bottle brush and clean the intake tube. You might be able to do it without removing the beater bar.

Or, you can just do what I do. Chunk the old machine and buy a new one. But, I am lazy.

Yeah, the Arm & Hammer stuff will help but it's hard to get rid of that smell...

Clean the beater bar...thoroughly. Then every part from there back to the bag area. If you can take it apart (tubing) to get back to the bag area...do so. Soak in white vinegar for an evening, rinse, and set it out to dry for a while. Tape a bounce sheet or something over the ends of the tubing so the air flowing through might help. Other than that...replacing the filters (hepa,etc) and thoroughly cleaning everything...that's about all you can do.

Take the beater bar out if possible. Lot of times hair, dog or human, gets around the shafts and get hot when it spins up. Take it out and clean thoroughly. Plastic/metal doesn't retain stink...it can be cleaned off.
