Ron Jaworski: Tape says Cam can be a special passer

“No one is a great quarterback in the NFL because of the way they run,” Jaws explained. “… [Newton] played very well from the pocket. … What also stood out was Newton’s patience in the pocket. And his ability to sit on his back foot and cut it loose. He made seam throws that were firm and required arm strength, yet demanded touch.

“Newton hung in the pocket and delivered without flinching. He was very good in the eye of the storm. This kid is a big-time talent. He still needs more experience, but the traits are there to be a special passer.”

“It starts with passing, but [Newton's] ability to break down a defense with his legs gives him an edge like few have ever had,” Jaworski said. “The read-option in the red zone is an added dimension that Newton brings. His speed is a decisive factor.

“One element I’ve talked about discussing Aaron Rodgers is the ability on third down to defeat man coverage by running. Newton gives you that same quality. That’s a real problem for a defense. It limits their coverage concepts

“From a skill-set standpoint,” Jaws said, “Newton could easily rank higher than 15th on my big board. He’s a top-ten talent. He needs more snaps; one year is not enough. But I can’t wait to see him in a few months.”

Any pundit that has Cam in the top 1/2 of all 32 teams is a fair card in my books. Most of us would obviously had him higher due to favoritism, but that is understandable.

...Awaits tweets about Cam being ranked higher than Alex Smith.

i can understand him just being in the top 15 by some until they see him another year in.

the talent is there though. his head is also 100% in the game and that is what is going to make that talent realized.

regarding his patience in the pocket and all that jaws was talking about, one thing he didn't mention that fits in is that his eyes are always looking downfield and you can tell that those unscripted running plays he has, running is his last option and he is looking for that receiver to get open. i love that about him

15?!?! Please ... He is already better than Matt Ryan, Tony Romo, Jay Cutler, and Joe Flacco

Depends on your definition of better. Athletic ability and potential he is better. As far as the nuances of the QB game then I wouldn't say that. Saying the players you listed know the QB position better than Cam and probably execute better at pure QB play is probably correct.

I can see ranking him @ 15 simply because he's only played for one year, but he's clearly a top 10 talent.

Being named the 15th best QB in the league coming off an abbreviated rookie season ain't bad. He'll be considered the best QB in the league in 3 years.

This is easy name the first 7 qbs you would take......

Rodgers

Brees

Manning

Manning

Brady

Newton?

Who else would come before him? I really tried to do this without being a homer

if ur factoring in age you might take Cam second.

    • They will be if they extend Young but I don't think we're there just yet. Morgan and Canales are tied and I don't believe Tepper is going to go look for a new front office for Bryce as things stand.
    • I was playing around with the ESPN playoff predictor and it shows if 49ers and Rams finish with same record, the Rams hold the tiebreaker.
    • This is my thinking as well. Seattle played as good as they could on defense and Panthers still had a chance until those back to back turnovers.  I don't think the Rams played particularly well in their game against us, alot things went our way in order to win.  Someone pointed out the Rams were bad on the east coast road games and Seattle has been the better road team but they just fought a hard contested game against the Panthers, and now they travel to San Fran this week for their biggest game of the season to determine the division and if they are the overall #1 seed in the NFC or will be traveling for the Wildcard weekend.  If they lose they then travel back cross the country to play a team they've just beaten two weeks ago, not saying they won't be favored against the Panthers but the energy of hosting our first playoff game in 10 years along with the get back effect of having just lost to this team could be huge.
