Jake gunslinger or game manger

Lot of talk about this so what do you think Jake is…a gunslinger or game manager

I know gunslinger sound better and game managers have sort of a bad rep for no huge arm strength..But I have heard more people call Jake a game manager than gunslinger

It's more of a personality trait than what their arm does. Obviously weak armed QBs can't strike deep, but the who concept of a gunslinger is something different to just throwing deep.

A gunslinger is a player who feels they need to make plays to get the team to win. They have this inside pressure to always look for the big play and to occassional take big risks in doing so. These kind of players rarely have consistent seasons throughout, but they also win several games with late desperate come backs. The main attribute that fits these guys is a great mental strength. They turn the ball over, often, but they also put up points. They need the strength to always forget the last play and to keep pushing for the win.

A game manager tends to allow the game to play out and waits for mistakes in the defense. The will correctly go through their progressions and often just use the easy dump off to maintain drives rather than going for the big play. They feel it is more important to keep the offense on the field for as long as possible, thus keeping the ball off the ground and the clock ticking. They are also VERY aware of the situation and need to be able to change things at the line. These guys are calm and rarely get riled up as that affects their composure and the game plan.

Jake fits the gunslinger mentality. Strong willed, emotional, driven and will try to win the game if it hangs on the balance.

Most feel the Panthers need a game manager to compliment their running game, but this is not the case. Our offensive scheme uses the passing game as a big play factor to force teams to keep only 8 in the box. If we used more short passing drive maintaining throws, it would allow the safeties to come up and we would find out running game would be smothered. So we use a more aggressive passing game to keep the safeties playing honest. We also feel with a consistent running game we can generally gget a first down with two runs, which allows us to go for a big playand get some big yardage in one go. This also means we do a lot of three and outs, as if the opposition correctly diagnoses our first or second down, we are often put in a tricky third down situation, which neither our passing or running game is suited for.

Jake fits the kind of QB that our scheme needs. We need someone who is not afraid to look for the big play and his career comeback wins speaks volumes that he wins games that are on the line. If you all feel a game manager is what we need, you need to look no further than David Carr. The guy was brilliant at using his check downs and trying to keep the drive going, but that kind of ideal got us stuck as they knew we had no way of going deep. So they stiffled our running and passing game in the same manner.

Jake was once called a Poor Man's Farve...(sorry had to say it)...we dont need jake sitting back there making dump off and check down throws. We occasionally need the bomb to Smitty to keep defenses honest.... Jake needs to be a gunslinger but manage the game...a sack is better than giving them six....

this can be said of every QB...not every QB can do it. Jake definitely cannot do it on a consistent basis.

Gunslinger and game manager are the two ends of the spectrum. There is no hybrid of the two. There are game managers who can throw deep and there are gunslingers who are really good at handing the ball off to a stud back but there is no such thing as a gunslinger who can manage the game and make the smart play consistently.

In Fox's run first, play smart D scheme I have always felt that a game manager was higher on the priority list to fit the offense and Jake is NOT a true game manager. Not at all.

Pennington threw 4 vs the Ravens and he is not a risk taker type of QB. Sometimes craptacular games turn up at the worst time.

Yeah, but the Ravens defense is quite a few notches above Arizona's.

As for the original question, Jake is a little bit of neither. He's an average QB with one incredibly gifted WR. Look back at the SD and CHI games last year. Jake couldn't throw the "lob it deep and let Smitty do the work" passes, so he had to actually make plays. And he did. Now look at the GB and NO games. We won both games because Jake threw up a prayer and Smitty answered it.

As to the topic, he's a gunslinger, and that's exactly what an offense under John Fox needs. If Fox had a game manager running his conservative attack, we'd have no spark at all.

You are wrong....while QB's can be one or the other they can work on perfecting the other.... A Gunslinger can manage the game when needed...i.e. brett Farve's best years was when he was able to manage the game and not have to force issues....A game manager can sometimes foce issues to keep defenses honest....Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and Phillip rivers are good examples of a QB being able to use both....

      I understand the concerns--he is not P. Sewell or Joe Thomas.  He has technique issues and was not great in the run game and was good in pass protection when UGA did not pass much.  Then there is the immediate need vs long term need perspective.   I did not see Freeland being there-frankly. Here is why:   He has nearly 35" arms and his hands are large (10.5").  He ran a 4.93 40 at the combine.  He is very agile.  His vertical was 33.5".   Physically, he is a freak. He is 21 and he seems very intelligent (coachable). You have to remember, some of these rookies are 24, 25 years old. Freeling is A team player.  His shortcomings are fixable.  Short arms (as with the kids from Utah and Miami) are not fixable.  The Run on OTs began at #9: Fano (picked 10 picks earlier) has 32" arms and his hands are 9".  He did not play in the SEC like Freeling.  Many think the short arms project him to guard. Mauigoa (picked 10th) has 33" arms.  He is a solid player, but his arms make him borderline as a T (they seek 34" and up as ideal)  Kayden Proctor (picked 12th overall) struggled in pass protection and projects by many to RT or G.  Weight management is a concern. So it is possible that Freeling will be the first LT taken who actually plays LT.  (he also has the ability and experience to play RT)  His questions are fixable and not limited to physical limitations.  Here is the question:  If you know that you need a Tackle, and you could choose between all four of these players, who would you pick? I am not sure that Freeling would not be the player I selected if given the opportunity to take any of them.

      The more I think about this pick the more I like it. The Icky injury might end up being a blessing in disguise for everyone except Icky unfortunately. If Freeling pans out at LT the Panthers have a good player on a rookie contract at a premium position at a time when they’re going to need to potentially pay Bryce for his next contract. Icky was likely going to command a big salary jump for his next contract and now, there’s a strong justification he’s not going to be worth a big money extension until he rehabs and proves he can still play at a high level. Since he’s finishing his rookie deal this season, it will be interesting to see if the Panthers bring him back for the 2027 season. Obviously it’s too early to say and they will probably wait to see how the season pans out with Moton still elite but aging and clearly battling persistent injuries, and they need to see if Freeling can develop into a starter during his rookie year. But ultimately this might have opened up a huge chunk of salary cap for the next 4-5 years.

      You read my mind Nastradamus! If Rodriguez is still there I feel like it will be hard to pass on him. And one of these TE we keep drafting have to hit eventually and Delp is just as good as the others.
