Sean McDermott comments on the #2 CB spot

I don't think people are overreacting. We have our first preseason game tomarrow and no #2. Even if all Shaun meant is competiition, it still sucks we have no one stepping out and seperating themselves. hopefully someone does before the season starts.

Sean may very well already have his guy. He has no obligation to tell the fans exactly what the status of the competition is.

Remember this time last year? Who was our clear cut #1 QB? What did Rivera say? That's right, it was still a competition, even though we all had opinions on who was ahead or behind. In reality, Ron probably knew early on who he was going to play, but he didn't announce it because he wanted to press Cam to be the best he could be. That very well may be what Sean is doing here.

And yeah, QB is a bit more important than #2 CB. I understand the stakes and expectations are different this year than last, but let's give this one time to play out. I am a lot less worried about CB than I am DL.

*sigh*

Hurney has a pretty good reputation around the league.

From where did you find this information?

As far as the W/L record, fine, but a lot of people on this board were convinced that Fox was the worst coach in the world until we fired him, and now all those losses are suddenly Hurney's fault and not Fox's.

For the last 5 years of his tenure here, if you didn't see that Fox had his head up his ass as a head coach here you probably had your head up your ass as well.

Fact is, the GM doesn't control everything that goes on. There's always a little bit(or a lot) of luck.

Luck applies, but not overwhelmingly if you are a good GM that runs a tight operation. If this were true, 12 different teams would be making the playoffs every single year and teams like the Pats, Steelers, Ravens, Chargers, Giants, Packers, and Falcons would be having some 2-14 seasons.

You never really know if a guy is gonna get hurt, or if a guy has something special that others haven't seen. Remember, Tom Brady was passed up by every team in the league 5 TIMES. Every GM, the good ones and the bad ones, had 5 shots at him and didn't take him.

As it goes for finding superstar players, Brady is more like catching lightning in a bottle. This doesn't erase the real gap between the Patriots' personnel management and ours or the Browns. Would Tom Brady have succeeded anywhere he went? Do you remember that the Patriots also had a good defense, a stout running game, and a kicker with ice in his veins when their dynasty reigned supreme? Were these all lucky acquisitions?

There's luck in this. What's the difference between Otah being a consistent Pro Bowler and a bust? A little bit of motivation that you can bet he pretended to have in pre-draft workouts? An imperceptible weakness in a knee ligament that wasn't apparent until it tore?

Revisionist history. Otah had questions about toughness and motivation before the draft. Hurney saw a closing window for a superbowl run after Delhomme's injury and tried to build a championship team in one year. He uncharacteristically (until that point) traded a valuable future pick for a risky talent. He didn't just pick Otah's name out of a tumbler.

And yet these are the things we judge NFL front offices by.

Well, it's kinda their job. If their decision making doesn't yield positive results, they don't need to be sitting in that seat.

But hey, sometimes a message board fan actually gets to buy a team and run it that way, firing people every few months, signing the big names and drafting the big stars all the time, running things Madden-style.

What relevance does this have?

That's called Dan Snyder and the Redskins.

Again, relevance? It seems to me you're just skirting the main issue of this thread (lack of investment in CB position) in favor of parroting fear prop. Hypothetically, if we fired Hurney, our choices of replacements would never simply be limited to a bunch of message board fans and anybody as bad as Dan Snyder. Besides, the very guy you're bitching at everyone for critiquing started out writing the beat for the Redskins.

And what do these teams all have in common? I don't expect us to have any more 2-14 seasons either now that we have Cam Newton.

So will that automatically make Marty a "good" GM?

the amount of teams still lacking a franchise QB is quickly dwindling.

after that it comes down to whose franchise QBs are the best as well as the pieces surrounding them.

Huddlers are reading too much into this comment. It seems more like he's trying not to name a favorite before players even officially take the field.

I have actually inferred from all that I read that the secondary will be stronger this season. Gamble is solid, Godfrey is settled, Nakamura is an upgrade, and we have a question mark right now at CB2. We have holes elsewhere, but let's also assume the DL will be somewhat improved. Even if these units just improve to average performance (somewhere in the middle of the league in yards and scores allowed) and the offense returns we will be a MUCH better football team.

Big picture: people are questioning not drafting a DL or CB with that #9 overall. I think Keuchly will contribute starting tonight! His presence alone is worth at least 1 or 2 3 and outs more per game than last year. Could a CB give us that or a DT? I really doubt it.

Hurney got it right with Kuechly. Plus, this defense had so far to go to improve that its not surprising that we couldn't fill all the holes.

I still like the rookie Norman to ultimately win the starting job. Hogan will contribute. Munn will find his niche.

This is not a sky is falling kind of comment. It was an off-hand sarcastic comment that ended up in a tweet. It's not like that was a true journalistic moment.

People are amazing. Meltdown because of one little comment - he could have been joking. Butler did fine last year. Norman will be starting week 1 because of his height. Reality is our pass rush was more of a problem than our corners last year. They are not many corners in the NFL that could contain the pass happy NFC South anyway. We just need to get some turnovers this year and have red zone stops.

I'm not bitching everyone out for critiquing Hurney. I am pointing out the idiocy of the "OMG Hurney is the worst ever!" people popping up every time it's noted that our team has weaknesses anywhere. You can't have a thread on here that mentions #2 CB or DT without it turning into people calling for the GM to be fired, before the preseason even starts. Not every thread mentioning Cam or Beason or Olsen turns into people talking about how unbelievably great Hurney is for getting those guys, so I don't see why every thread mentioning a weakness has to turn into a bitch fest, unless you think that other teams just don't have weaknesses. If you think Fox was lost for his last few years here, I mostly agree. My point was, if you think the coaching was bad during that time, it doesn't seem fair to pin the W/L record entirely on the GM. I don't remember many people saying "Hey, we shouldn't blame Fox, Hurney didn't give him good enough players"

    • I said could, not would. I recognize he has potential based on past performance. Compared to what KP has done, Howell has more potential and the physical traits to make noise. KP has small hands and a weak arm. Not something you want in even your backup QB.  I've been hammering since last off-season before we re-signed Dalton, improve the room. Other than getting younger, I don't see how anyone can say we legitimately improved the room or even tried. We might as well have signed Josh Rosen.  Dalton is still on the roster for now. That's 3 QBs unless we trade or cut him. He's still Bryce's mentor after all. Do you believe we are going to draft someone with potential and give them a legitimate opportunity to develop from the practice squad? Are we going to carry 3 QBs on the active roster? 4 for a developmental rookie? Are we going to potentially cut KP if we draft a rookie and he's outperformed? Doubtful. Cutting Dalton(if we can't trade him) and KP would be 8m in wasted cap space.  I chose Howell as an example because he showed promise in his only full season as a starter. You could plug in another name with the physical traits and potential and what i said would still apply. KP showed almost nothing and was benched. I genuinely don't care if it’s rookie pick as long as there is the potential to develop into a future NFL QB.  As much as I can't stand him, Bellichek was always developing a number 2 QB even with the GOAT as his starter. The wisdom of that was evident when Cassell came in when Brady was hurt week 1 and went 11-5 and almost made the wildcard, which 11-5 gets you almost any other year. I give credit where it's due though. Cassel and Jimmy G both came into the league as developmental QBs, potential QB1s, and went on to have careers.  You never know if you never try. KP feels like a punt in addressing the most important position on the field. Bryce has never played 2 full games of franchise QB level football back to back.  If Bryce progresses, are you ready to offer a 280m 5 year extension based off a one hit wonder year? If Bryce regresses and we need a QB in 27, are we going to trade a fortune away again to trade up to 1 to get one? Are you ready to do the past 3 years all over again?  To me, it's not about Kenny Pickett. It's about the move itself. It was a feeble attempt to improve the QB room. We better hope Bryce succeeds, because if he doesn't, we literally have no backup plan right now.
    • IOL that early isn’t good value at all. We have a LT who might not ever be good again and a RT that might retire soon. T seems deep early in this draft, so I’d go there in the 1st.
    • Season tickets aren't affordable anymore definitely when they've been so bad for 8 years before last season. When I started going my seats were front row uppers for like 38 bucks. Those seats are 100 dollars now. Teams make their money from tv, if I was an owner my goal would be to break even on tickets and concessions.
