NFL Roster rules

Some of this and maybe all of it will be elementary to a lot of you. But some of these questions will undoubtedly come up soon and this can be 1 central thread for those who need to reference it.

Active roster limit:53

Players who do not count against the active 53: Practice squad, reserve PUP(physically unable to perform) and those listed on Injured reserve.

Injured Reserve rules: In years past once you were put on I.R. you were done for the season. However with the new cba, teams can bring back 1 marquee player from I.R. at any point in the season.

Practice squad rules: 8 players can be on your practice squad. Players can not be on a teams practice squad for more than 2 years. They also are only allowed up 1 accrued season in which they were not activated for more than 9 games. This essentially means this players can practice with your active roster but may not dress for games.

Reserve PUP Rules: Players who receive this designation(different than the preseason active pup, that allows you to keep extra players than can't practice during training camp)are not allowed to practice with the team for the first 6 weeks of the season. Then teams have a 3 week window to either activate the player or place them on I.R.

in addition if another team wants to sign one of your practice squad player to their active roster they are free to do so, assuming they have room on their active roster.

Game day actives: 46,this is the amount each team is allowed to dress each week. Leaving you with 7" inactives" each week. Inactives must be listed some odd hours before kickoff.

Roster cut dates: August 28th:teams must cut down to 80 players

August 31st: teams must cut down to final 53 active players(important to note our last preason game is august 30th, so Hurney/Rivera and crew will have less than 24 hours to make their final decisions after the final tryout game.)

Also you are free to pay practice players more to entice them to stay. They are free to turn down offers from other teams.

That new ir rule hasnt been approved by the nflpa. Guess its not so elementary. Also i dont think its ANY point i think there are stipulations.

Good thing you were the first to read this thread! Took me a few minutes to research some of that poo, but your like a walking nfl rule book. Thanks.

Far from that. Seen the nflpa thing on espn and read a story about some packers players on their p squad making bank last year.

You would have to pay them a bunch over the normal practice squad rate to get them not to go elsewhere. The practice squad rate in 2012 is 5700 bucks per week. If you take someone from a practice squad you have to promote them to the active roster. The minimum you can pay them is a three week contract for 3/16th of the minimum player salary which is 390,000 or $73,000 which is equivalent to 12 weeks on the practice squad.

    • I’ve rarely ever been more sure of anything than losing out — but how can anyone say with a straight face “Bryce hasn’t improved, but Canales has and he’s masks his flaws”. You have to be so out of touch with reality to put one way above the other when discussing those two.
    • Last night was the classic example of a visiting team just holding on through the wave of emotion a home team has at the start of a big time game. Bama’s first two kickoff returns really set them back as far as playcalling and allowed OU to dictate field position. The emotion of the home crowd fed into what OU was doing at that point, and it felt like Bama would not be able to overcome that.     Once the kickoff returner was told to fair catch every kick, the game shifted, as Bama wasn’t starting each drive inside their own 15. It was then that Bama was able to make some plays, outscoring OU 34-7 the rest of the way.  I think the last 3/4 of the game proves Bama was the better team. OU was just able to ride the initial wave of emotion to a big lead, but Bama held on just enough.  However, had OU blocked the punt on Bama’s second drive and scored a TD (vice a FG on the ensuing drive), things likely would have been different.  Anyway, Roll Tide!
    • Inappropriate relationship with a team staffer, followed up with some stalking behavior, and ultimately a felony home invasion charge from a visit at her apartment that culminated in him threatening her life and his as well.
