Charles Johnson...

CJ tweeted that he knows he needs to step it up. He'll be fine.

Overall, I really liked what I saw out of the D today, even if it was the Jets. TD was on fire in his few opportunities, Norman looked solid, Edwards anchored a stout run defense, and of course Luke was great.

They look much better at this point than at the same time last year.

Oh, and it looks like Keiser roll might turn out to be a nice rush specialist.

Julius Peppers is an all-world DE, and I can't even remember how many times he faced a rookie or second or third string Tackle and the huddle would go nuts like he should be getting 4 sacks, and his final stat count would be 1 solo tackle. It happens sometimes. I'm not too worried about CJ.

CJ didnt suck tonight. The fuggn Jets just found them a fuggn damn STUD at RT. That dude is a giant. Made CJ look like a LB.

How is he a stud RT? I think he was just a good matchup. What the game is about....CJ is more of a bulldozer. The bigger Ts are a bad matchup for him. It is why Bell has success in practice against him. Bell is big enough to deal with guys that want to manhandle him....Bell cant handle speed. That Jets T would probably get beat by a speed rusher without help

O-Lineman and D-Lineman typically do not go hard in the preseason unless they have something to prove. Johnson is coming off an injury and has nothing to prove so I'm not worried.

Anyone remember in the 2010 preseason where our DL was just manhandling everyone and Brayton was even abusing Roos? Meant nothing come the regular season. Lineman really try hard to stay fresh since it is the most brutal position to play, whether you're on the OL or DL.

I think we had like 20 sacks that year in preseason....

Peppers used to get handled by tight ends.

FIFY

Seriously though, CJ is a beast. Yes, he got beat a couple times, lining up against a backup. But every top DE gets beat every now and then. Hell, Byron Bell put Jared Allen on his ass last season.

Johnson, and Hardy for that matter, got consistent pressure on the pocket. They just didn't reach the QB.

King Charles* also only played one half of football. I mean, we would all love to see CJ put up 32 sacks in a season but, a sack every 30 minutes is a lot to ask for.

*We've got to find a better nickname than that. I vote for Charlie the Unicorn...

    • What I love and hate about this team is it’s more filled with potential breakout players than ever before. JT, XL, Coker, Smith-Wade, Ikem, Trevin… and even Bryce are all guys I could legitimately see taking the next step. But the problem with having so many of those guys is that team success somewhat relies on them taking that step, and some are bound not to. That being said, I’m cautiously optimistic given our softer schedule, the way the offense clicked late last year, and the direction we finally have at GM, coach, and QB. Could see us as a sneaky playoff team.
    • Me, signing up for FanDuel Network, and then canceling FanDuel Network:
    • Smith-Wade for me. He has the path to some decent hefty snaps in Evero’s scheme. He held his own last year and improved as he continued to get snaps— If he makes some strides, could be a very capable nickel.  I agree with Sanders. Bryce had some trust in him that final Falcons game post crazy head-stand.  Bryce looked for him a lot that final game and made some critical catches to get us the W. Seems he’s put in major work so I’m hopeful about him.  Wallace will have an offseason under his belt. I like him a lot, was higher graded than most remember in his draft (I.e Brugler had him LB3/70 overall) but he isn’t as cerebral of an LB as we’re used to. I think he could thrive if we get D captain/film-junky type next to him— because right now that’s Jewell.  Still a bit cautious but love the talent. Rozeboom may snag some playing time from him if he’s still working out the kinks.
