She had a job offer that didn't offer enough money to justify the increased cost of living, but had more potential for higher earnings down the road. She had to turn it down.

But now she's saying that her only long-term future with the company is in Chicago. As someone who's never lived outside of charlotte, naturally this scares the poop out of me. It won't be easy for me to find a job up there, either.

Do they at least have biscuits up there??

Ugh, sounds like you are giving up a lot for a chance at something bigger. Many stories can be told of people who took that chance and it lead to success. Many other stories of those coming back home with their tails between their legs. Might be the biggest decision you make in life.

The city has something like a 15% property tax rate and the suburbs are even higher (some approaching 30%). Charlotte's 1.4% looks pretty good in comparison.
