Newton not worried about Smith's comments

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Cam Newton downplayed the criticism he received last week from Panthers teammate Steve Smith, saying he and his Pro Bowl receiver are still ``on good terms.''

Smith told reporters he chided Newton on the sideline last Thursday night for sulking during the closing minutes of Carolina's 36-7 blowout loss to the Giants.

Newton says he didn't read anything into that, saying he views the 12-year veteran receiver as ``a big brother'' who's always giving him advice on football and life.

Newton believes it's ``bogus'' to single out one instance of Smith offering advice to him and make it a big deal.

Newton says ``Steve Smith talks to me every day.''

Smith says in hindsight he probably should have kept what he said to Newton between the two of them.

Also, for those of you having a heart attack over the source, here's one that might work better for you: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/panthers-newton-downplays-smiths-criticism-230812419--nfl.html

So we are completely humiliated on Thursday night and people really think Cam is worried about the media headlines.. Guarantee his concerns are making sure that doesn't happen Sunday.

Smith's comments were spot on, just really wasn't anybody not collecting a pay check from the Carolina Panthers business.

They are good for each other. Cam resurrects his career in exchange Smitty helps make sure the boy becomes the man.

I sometimes cannot believe how extremely arrogant some of you Panthers fans are. Smitty turning Cam into a man can't be for real seeing that Smitty is still quite immature himself...Except with some of you. Having fits of rage isn't my idea of maturity.

So, going forward you will be giving Smitty credit for turning Cam into a man because him sitting on a sideline with a towel over his head really bothered you, right?

    • I’ve rarely ever been more sure of anything than losing out — but how can anyone say with a straight face “Bryce hasn’t improved, but Canales has and he’s masks his flaws”. You have to be so out of touch with reality to put one way above the other when discussing those two.
    • Last night was the classic example of a visiting team just holding on through the wave of emotion a home team has at the start of a big time game. Bama’s first two kickoff returns really set them back as far as playcalling and allowed OU to dictate field position. The emotion of the home crowd fed into what OU was doing at that point, and it felt like Bama would not be able to overcome that.     Once the kickoff returner was told to fair catch every kick, the game shifted, as Bama wasn’t starting each drive inside their own 15. It was then that Bama was able to make some plays, outscoring OU 34-7 the rest of the way.  I think the last 3/4 of the game proves Bama was the better team. OU was just able to ride the initial wave of emotion to a big lead, but Bama held on just enough.  However, had OU blocked the punt on Bama’s second drive and scored a TD (vice a FG on the ensuing drive), things likely would have been different.  Anyway, Roll Tide!
