Grantland: Punting on 4th-and-1 candidate for worst coaching move of the year

It's not only the 4th and 1...it was the horried clock managemnet at the end of the 1st half (which still is bleeding over from last season....clock management....)

I knew McFail sucked, Chud is ambititous in his play calling, but now...I am about to board the yea... RR sucks as a head coach train.

yea i was pissed about the lax effort at the end of the half, but in actuality, had we used timeouts, we would have ultimately just punted them the ball back with significant time.

then, it would have been the opposite fanatical reaction, "oh we should have run out the clock"

I may be going overboard saying that our defense is the worst ever you're right. But when your team has TEN DAYS to prepare for a division rival you've got plenty of film of, and they still put 30 points on you, you should go to JR's office on Monday and give him back your gamecheck because you poo the bed. You can try and find silver linings because a few guys (finally) showed up, but points are all that matter, and you have up 30. You let a guy drive 70 yards in 36 seconds without even needing to take a timeout OR spike the ball. If that isn't a complete disaster I don't know what is. I can't think of a group of guys failing at their jobs in such grand fashion.

i agree completely with the grantland premise

ETA: as io mentioned yesterday what is even worse than the no balls call to punt was that I did not see one player pleading to go for it. Am I wrong here? Did anyone see any of our offensive players asking for the chance to go for that last 18 inches (pre-measurement)? 99 out of 100 times that a player gets hit wher cam did on the arm the ball is coming out. We all know that nakamura is a poor man's poor man. I hate the tricky dick, cutesy chud offense going wildcat at the top of that last series and I hate a lot of missed tackles that happened all over the field yesterday. But if we don't have our QB, line, backs, TE's, SOMEBODY screaming at Riv to go for that yard and seal that divisional road game upset, we have got some weaknesses a new OC, new safety, and a whole week of tackling rodeo simply will not fix.

In hindsight I probably woulda went for it, idk.

Not worst coaching move of the year though, our D had been playing awesome and then the fact the punt went to the 1 it was just bullshit how our D folded when the odds were finally in favor of them after dominating when the Falcons offense favored our D

No timeouts either. I think that is a big factor.

The D was not playing awesome. We had sacks, but Ryan shredded us most of the day. We got ran all over. Turner had his FIRST catching TD of his career. Our defense is terrible. For those saying it was the right decision, you are completely wrong. A regular team with a regular secondary, yes, it's the right call. But this team has special team fodder and 5th round draft picks covering one of the most explosive WR's in the game. You felt confident in that?

Personally, I knew the moment I seen they were punting this game was over. The stats don't lie. With Cam we're like 21 in 24 on 4th and 1 chances. You spend countless money on running backs. And when it comes to using them, you don't. Did we really get a new coach with Rivera? I felt like John Fox was in there running the plays. Sadly, what this is is Hurney bringing in another YES man. We brought in a new coach for some fire, some courage. Obviously Rivera is completely out of touch, when he thinks this swiss cheese secondary can stop Matt Ryan (which I may add, is the best QB in the league at this moment right now).

No way should this be considered worst coaching decision of the year.

Though I personally wish we would have gone for it, the decision to punt was completely understandable. Our defense was playing great up to that point, a punt that was fielded on their 1 yard line, with 57 seconds left, and no timeouts? Our secondary just couldn't close, typical Panthers 4th quarter ending...

Let's also not forget the fumble that could of ended the game. As someone mentioned earlier, in hindsight we shouldn't have been in that situation to begin with...

If Rivera went for it and we did not get it...THAT would be the worst coaching decision of the year...bc all ATL needed was a fg to win.

The punt was downed at the 1cm line....it could not have worked more in favor of that decision...now a fumbling-tripping no playmaking FS and DBs with questionable awareness erased all the good from that.

Cam should not have fumbled and we should all be discussing how great it is to be Panther fans..

It was the one moment at the most critiical point of the game where you do not fumble..he did.

It was Cam's John Kasay kick out of bounds moment.
