"One word" play calling

Old conventional wisdom? Dumbed-down offense.

New hotness? GENIUS!

"For now, the Patriots are ahead of the game.

Simplified play calls are all the rage on the college level, where O’Brien has transferred the Patriots’ package — dubbed “NASCAR” at Penn State — to the Nittany Lions, who ran 39 plays in just more than a quarter to erase a 28-17 deficit to defeat Northwestern, 39-28, Saturday.

That previously mentioned lengthy West Coast play call? It’s the same one ESPN analyst Jon Gruden threw at former Auburn quarterback Cam Newton on his QB Camp television special.

Newton was at a loss to equate an Auburn play to an NFL play. Newton was ridiculed nationally because critics thought it showed that Newton couldn’t handle a pro offense.

But what people didn’t realize at the time was Newton’s subsequent answer, when Gruden talked about Auburn using the no-huddle a lot, was actually more telling.

“Our method is ‘simplistic equals fast,” Newton said. “It’s so simple as far as, you look to the sideline [and] you see ‘36’ on the board. And that’s a play. And we’re off.”

What people didn’t get, because the NFL is slow to evolve, is that Newton was actually showing them a glimpse of the future.

The NFL is a copycat league, so only when someone with job security — like Belichick — tries something new and it works does it spread across the professional ranks.

Belichick has learned that if it’s going on in college, then it’s coming to the NFL. That’s the talent pool, and you should accentuate the strengths and minimize the weaknesses of that talent.

Thanks to guys like Kelly, college players entering the NFL are playing offensive football faster than ever. So that means more teams are going to go faster and faster on offense.

The Patriots are already there, as everyone saw against the Broncos, thanks to one word.

Yes, powerful indeed.

(P.S. If Chudzinski insists upon introducing college ideas into his offense, more of this and less (but not the elimination) of the read-option would be nice. A gassed defense against Cam, Smitty, Olsen, Stew, D-Will? DROOL!)

Sadly defenses won't leave the same running lanes uncovered as they do when having to cover Brady and that high octane Patriots offense. The plays we are calling are basic read option plays. Cam just needs to make the reads, and he is not consistently. The hesitation and indecisiveness is slowing the offense down.

We need run blocking. We need pass blocking. We don't need to blame the people fighting the hardest for this team taking all the blame and facing termination. I'm sorry, but no one seems to be pointing at the offensive line through all of this. Stew and D'lo are not this bad. Cams best runs have come when total collapse of the pocket occur. he's still fighting all he can. While our running backs can't gain a yard and can't pass cause you've got .3 seconds to throw the ball on every down. ecspecially third. Hell thats when he gets sacked the most. the oline needs to step it up cuz everybody else already has. Who knows? we could be running Billicheats playbook, but if you got no blocking what good is it?

How many times did Cam run the option right into the blitz Sunday? Thats not on the o-line thats on Cam. The whole point of the option is to run the play away from the pressure.

That hesitation showed in the passing game as well, as he consistently missed open receivers, holding the ball upwards of 6-8 seconds before throwing another incompletion.

It just simply takes Cam too long to process just about anything this year. Do I think the guy can shake it off and get back on track? yes. But is his regression concerning? yes.

We get the Bye week and lets hope that Chud can find some schemes to get him comfortable PASSING the football so he can continue to establish his throwing threat and get a little more respect from defenses. Maybe some of the option plays will open up for him when he can see and get a better handle on what defenses are throwing at him.

Two guards and Shockey from last year are gone.

I'm not certain of the people replacing them.

When looking at the failure of the run game, look there, either this line has not gelled or the two guards and TE replacing them can't block.

The TE replacing Shockey isnt even on the field.

How the hell does one option away from a blitz? In fact, that's how you stop an option... numbers. Hesitation is a byproduct of 1te 1wr routes or wr not getting open. Obviously Cam has had some issues, but Chud has been rigid and just plain bad. What is he going to fix in a week, that he couldn't in an entire off season?

    • In your opinion. What do you think Moton's true value in contract, dollars and guarantees? If we had not extended him, what is your plan for RT in 27 and 28? How important are good offensive linemen for our current offense? How much value do you put on protecting Bryce at this stage of his career? How difficult in general do you think finding above average tackles in the NFL is?
    • The Falcons have 2 significant offensive line injuries to start the 2025 season. Right tackle Kaleb Mcgary (who is the blindside protector for Penix since he is left-handed) is going to miss significant time, and it's looking more like it may be all season. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/falcons-expect-kaleb-mcgary-to-miss-significant-time https://x.com/BKsquared7/status/1959285822236107013. Also, the top backup and swing tackle, Storm Norton (cool name BTW) is having ankle surgery and may miss half the season. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/falcons-ot-storm-norton-out-6-8-weeks-after-ankle-surgery I don't root for injuries, but its also hard to be too sympathetic given how badly injuries have hit us in recent years. We definitely need to get that W in week 3 for our home opener at BOA. Despite our collective frustration at not being able to attend TC and then having boring preseason games, ultimately the most important objective of the preseason is to enter Week1 healthy, and we have at least done that. Hopefully the depth we think we have at Oline either shines through or isn't needed. Many other teams are in a bad spot with their offensive lines before the season even starts. For once, we aren't in that situation.
    • That roster was billed as a super smart and strong unit for a young QB….until he sucked though.   it didn’t have superstars but it had proven vets that checked well all the safe boxes and it was universally agreed the Panthers were putting him into position to succeed. BY just doesn’t fit a traditional O because he isn’t built like a traditional QB.  And he still doesn’t.   CJ Stroud would have had more success here than Bryce with that cast.   CJ just has the tools that fit the NFL more easily.  Young can find success but I have always argued it would take a Bryce centric plan (which we have never attempted IMO)
