Cam's Footwork in Pictures

Another thing i've noticed that he needs work on is keeping his eyes downfield when he's forced out of the pocket.

I thought he did a great job of this last year, but this year he hasn't.

In my opinion, a quarterback is at his most dangerous when he's flushed from the pocket. Look at the success Romo, Brady, Big Ben, and others find when they are on the move and being pushed out of the pocket.

And Yes, I know Romo sucks, but he actually is a pretty good passer when things are breaking down around him and when he is extending plays with his legs.

Romo is a massive tease. He can be so good at times, but crushingly bad at other times. He's basically a more talented version of Jake Plummer. He's going to make some great plays from time to time, but ultimately he's going to break your heart.

The next GM needs to make it a top priority to bring in someone to develop Cam Newton. That's the key to this franchise's future.

I believe when zod says he's not on the move it means he's not rolling out and throwing (it would still be bad mechanics even if he were)

Looking at the sequence and where he starts and where he finishes he is moving backwards and jumping in a diagonally back and to the right and creating a situation where he is throwing across his body an getting crossed up...almost like he hopped to throw it which he has always had a tendency to do.

Pull zods dick out of your mouth

When Cam does step back and throw off his back foot he really zings it... too much sometimes... look at some of the throws from the Chicago game. They were hard to catch rockets... I think it's hard for him to not throw it hard. Look at those screens and short touch passes... he's often way high or low.

Exactly, Cam has a lot to improve from being on the field to the media. But why does he? A lot of the blame goes toward Rivera ESP bc he's the "HC".

I dnt think a Harbaugh, Belichick, or even a Rex Ryan would've let Cam cover himself with a towel and pouch about it on the bench instead of trying to go over plays with teammates on the sideline the first time he committed it.

Rivera forced Smitty to be the first to say something about it. And when you have 89 saying something, it's not going to be seen right.

Coaches are paid to teach players. They're the ones to blame for bad mechanics.

Sure it sounds like a lot of the fans are defending Cam but the kid is only in his 2nd year. Great abilities with poor coaching of maturation in all phases.

Agreed that he needs strong coaching. But, he has to be willing to listen. There have been instances shown on the sideline where Shuka is trying to go over pics of the past series with Can, only to have him ignoring the coach.

I think it is weaknesses on both the coach's AND Cam's part.

Yep. Like when he threw the end if 1H Hail Mary into the stands behind the end one. He has little to no touch right now.

Yep. Sideline footage can be tough to interpret because you only get a glance here and a glance there, but I've never been around a football coach that would just let a player sit there and ignore him when he was trying to coach him.

We all knew Cam was going to be somewhat of a project, Shula has done well so far. I hope whoever they bring in next will help him take the next step, foot work included. As Fiz said those screen passes are UGLY, no excuse for that. I'd imagine some of those lasers that he throws 15-25 yards down field that sail high are also due to footwork.

You want to know why him and Smitty haven't connected on a TD? Watch his long throws. He's throwing off his backfoot every time, damn Jake syndrome. It's b/c he's paranoid in the pocket b/c that line sucks. He's lost confidence. Half the time, he just heaves it downfield as fast as he can hoping something happens.

    • Nothing wrong with starting to look for bodies early. It's a long injury filled season. I doubt we get through unscathed.
    • We're in alignment regarding Thielen not being a game changer/breaker for the Panthers. Getting the ball into hands of playmakers like TMac and XL is going to open up things more than it is getting it to Thielen underneath (or letting him go after 50/50 balls 20yds downfield in his mid-30s). However, in a room where the other guys are two second year guys and two rookies, having a reliable vet that they can learn from is just as important as it is for the QB to have as a reliable third option. I can see that being worth $8.5M (just 3%) of the $279.2M cap... especially when looking at what's left out there: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/_/position/wr However, the idea that the team is forcing production to Thielen and leading to losses isn't supported by the data. Targets, not receiving yards, are how you can tell if a player is being "force fed." In the two games mentioned, let's look at the other players available... vs. TB 10 targets - Adam Thielen 9 targets - David Moore 8 targets - Tommy Tremble, Xavier Legette 3 targets - Jonathon Brooks 1 target - Dan Chisena, Feleipe Franks, Stephen Sullivan vs. PHI 11 targets - Adam Thielen 8 targets - Xavier Legette 5 targets - Chuba Hubbard, David Moore 2 targets - Tommy Tremble 1 target - Ja'Tavion Sanders, Deven Thompkins There isn't exactly a bounty of other names to throw the ball to. In those games, AT was one of the top 2 WRs. Diontae had been gone by that point.   So... yea. Agreed that Thielen isn't exactly carrying the team in his mid-30s, but it's undeniable that he was the most reliable target last season that still has quite a bit of value this season. Whether or not that value is reflected in a manner folks think on the contract is going to come down to personal taste. However, the idea that the team was forcing production to AT and that was the reason behind some losses couldn't be further from the truth.
    • I would also add that I think it's more than money.  AT has looked absolutely miserable out there at times, and there was a lot of speculation he would demand to be traded.  Personally, I thought he was a lock to be moved last year.  Maybe his hamstring is the only thing that prevents that from happening. The fact that he's not only willing to come back and play, but excited about it, really bodes well for Bryce.  AT is a veteran and he knows the game.  If he didn't have confidence in Bryce, I guarantee you he wouldn't be in a Panther uniform this year.  I'll take that as a positive.
