Seasonal Blues

Have struggled with depression and the related anixiety disorder most of my adult life. I tried the SSRi s and they werent for me. It really isnt weather dependent for me - what seems to make it worse is an excess of alcohol intake - though at the time of the buzz it feels good, the day or days afterward my moods seem to really take a nose dive. Try to limit your alcohol intake, intake of sweets and carbs, and start working out - nothing makes me feel better than a good workout - it also relieves stress and anxiety - and yes its tough to do when the black dog appears. You have to be proactive with this illness. Nothing makes me feel any more useless and weak than being a slug.

To me the workout thing is huge. I workout so much now I think I'm addicted to it... I literally feel bad if I don't go to the gym... even on a planned off day. I feel so much better all of the time now, have more energy, less aches, and am generally in a much better mood. I also don't get sick nearly as much anymore.

I use to have panic attacks and anxiety about this time of the year, but now I like it.

Go see a doctor, get some prozac or whatever he says, and if he says therapy, do it.

You can beat it, and it's a lot easier than you think.

I live at the beach and hate summer...I hate the heat and the crowds. but the anxiety came

at the end of the fall, which was always my favorite season. Now I love winter, and the holidays.

A little spiritual help goes a long way too.

I used to loathe January and February. The cold was always fine until after the new year - but then it seemed endless.

I found that nostalgia helped. Watching movies I liked as a kid and breaking out the SNES for my favorite games.

Basically anything I loved to do when I was younger became synonymous with Winter. So I look forward to it now.

February is my least favorite month. The sun is never out and by that time of the year you are sick of the cold weather.

When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn't imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter.
