Hardy Plays Hard

Coming into Sunday’s game, Freeman had been pressured on 30% of his drop-backs. Against the Panthers, however, Freeman faced pressure on just over 43% of his drop-backs, in large part due to the outstanding play of Greg Hardy. Lining up in multiple spots along the defensive line, Hardy terrorized Donald Penn and the Tampa Bay offensive line to the tune of 11 combined QB disruptions, including a sack and three QB hits. His best stretch came midway through the fourth quarter, when he pressured Freeman three times in a span of five plays, as he beat Penn twice to the inside and then got into the backfield on a stunt. Only a penalty for encroachment on 3rd-and-short and a missed tackle kept Hardy’s grade of +4.1 from being even higher.

– Coming into the game, no quarterback had thrown for more yards on deep passes than Josh Freeman. But against the Panthers, Freeman was just one of six for 24 yards on such passes.

– Panthers rookie Frank Alexander came away with five QB disruptions while logging his highest snap total of the season.

– After a four game stretch in which he forced 31 missed tackles rushing, Doug Martin has eluded just three tackles on the ground in his past two games.

    • This team has a rich history of great linebackers.  Is a high standard to hold anybody to.  Take the fact, that the NFL has been prioritizing other positions over linebacker, adds to this also.  The fact that our drafts have been offensive heavy for awhile now, also adds to it.   As a fan of great defenses, I  am definitely not satisfied with the trend that has been happening.  While Morgan is a retired linebacker, it's not like he hasn't had other priorities in the 2 years he's been in control.  We also lost a good starter from last season, that we weren't expecting to lose.  Not making excuses, just observation.  At this point, it is what it is for this season, whether we like it or not.
    • Well I have never claimed anything he did was due to bad players on the other side.  On the flip side, people defend him on the regular with saying it isn’t his fault because his teammates are bad. The coaching, the other players, tell me I am lying.  Hmm.  Edit I am going to caveat that first thing. I for sure claimed you could not use college as a direct comparison to the NFL, because the NFL is another level entirely. So it does discount the opposition, in that context.  But once you have NFL results, no.
    • It's amazing how they started getting more pressure when they used the young pass rushers more instead of the Vikings rethreads
