Thoughts on Jonathan Cooper as a O-line draftee?

Regardless of how you feel about UNC their O-line play has been good and we definitely need depth there. I wouldn't take him in the first and I'd be hesitant to take him early in the second but if we got a mid to late second round pick and he was available I wouldn't be opposed to it.

LOL. Cooper is not going to be around in the "late second"

There is a strong possibility he is taken in the first 15 picks.

Every every draft I've seen has him going late first-mid second. That means he could be gone earlier or the strong possibility that he would hang around to the end of the second.

To be fair, he could have a poor workout at the combine and that could affect his draft stock.

Not splitting hairs here but I've watched every UNC game this year except Saturdays and the guy is an absolute beast. The entire Carolina offensive line is top notch and one of the best in the entire country. Cooper and Brennan Williams could both be first rounders and you've got another guy in James Hurst who could be a first rounder next year.

Like I said earlier, Gio Bernard just had one of the best seasons ever by a Carolina RB and may be ACC POY. A lot of this has to do with him being a legitimate NFL prospect but great running games/offense and great OL play go hand in hand.

I'm not saying he's not a good player. I've seen him in person and on tape and I like him but I just wouldn't want the Panthers to take him early on.

Guard play is going to be even more important now since the chop block might become illegal. We could use someone to open up pass/run lanes for Cam so he can either step up to avoid the outside rush and throw it or to take off running. I haven't seen too many times where he could scramble straight north out of the backfield. He's had to spin out of trouble and out on the edges of the defense where speed is king. It almost is starting to seem like guard is more important going forward atm; at least for as a position of need.

Honestly, I'd rather bring in a decent veteran OG. We already have a raw developmental guy at LG. If an OG is the BPA when we're on the clock in the 2cd, we'd definitely have to give him a long look, but we're definitely going to be drafting way too high in the 1st to consider an OG, IMO. I don't want an OG in the top 10. I'd be looking at OT, DT, DB, and WR in the 1st.

    • The good news is that we are pretty uniquely well established to address all of our needs this season. We have $14m real cap space, and something like $40m in trade deadline cap space. Not sure exactly how that works out. But, we have the room to absorb any bad contracts. With recent rule changes regarding retention, that went into effect this season, we now have a huge advantage in the trade market.  On top of that, while we do have obvious needs, we also have a glut of talent in certain areas that we struggle to find ice time for. We are over-stocked on scrappy talented lil-guys, strong defensively sound 3rd liners and shutdown left shot dmen. Whether it's a package or separate deals, idk. But, one of each from Stank/Blake/Nads, Erob/Carrier/KK/Jank, and Walker/Nystrom; throw in some 1st round picks (and frankly any other prospects they want) and we should be able to come out with a 1b to pair with Bussi and either a 2c with size or a 2c and size.   TL/DR We got the money, you got the stuff?
    • I don’t  think 6’4 was ever considered small or undersized. Baby hands tho, yes that was his thing That’s an interesting idea, like an optical illusion? Sounds like you have personal experience with this!
    • in the 25' draft the Carolina Panthers had hired Brandt Tillis someone who actually understood how to build a successful team & build through the draft .  this team was yes mismanaged for years prior to Brandt Tillis joining the team in 25' & rarely done anything right in the draft outside occaionaly getting lucky on an UDFA such as Jalen Coker who's dad coincidentally happened to be a huge Carolina Panthers fan, hint hint  ...just saying
