Questions about Marc Ross

What Ron Rivera was to head coaching interviews, Marc Ross is becoming for GM interviews.

Last season, Ross interviewed for GM opportunities with the Bears, Colts, and Seahawks, all of whom hired other candidates instead.

So far this year, he's interview with the Jags, who are said to be choosing between Dave Caldwell and Steve Keim, and the Chargers, who are down to Tom Telesco and Jimmy Raye as their final two. He's scheduled to interview with the Jets on Monday, though the chatter is that it's just to satisfy the Rooney Rule before they hand the job to Tom Gamble.

As far as the other teams with openings, the Cardinals, Chiefs and Browns, none have so far requested permission to speak to Ross. Assuming he doesn't get the Jags job, Arizona is expected to promote Steve Keim; the Chiefs are considered most likely to hire John Dorsey and the Browns have three other interviews lined up (though there's still rampant speculation that they'll hand the job to Mike Lombardi.

The Panthers may actually be the only real GM opportunity left for Ross, but even here there's speculation that Giants colleague Dave Gettleman is the leading candidate.

The Panthers could wind up being his landing spot, but historically speaking, when the team has gone after someone that was unexpectedly passed over by several others, the results haven't been good. Examples include Jimmy Clausen, Rashard Anderson, more recently Ron Rivera and most notoriously, Rae Carruth.

So what is it about Ross?

Do you think other teams are just being stupid by passing on him or, like the other examples listed above, do you think to yourself "maybe there's a reason"?

Honest answer. Minority. Thats the reason the rooney rule is awful. People with no chance of a job being interviewed is more demeaning then not being asked.

It's been speculated that some of his prior interviews were Rooney Rule related, which sucks. The Chiefs and Browns will satisfy the Rooney Rule by interviewing Ray Farmer.

Mind you, I have no issue with any organization hiring who they really want, but yeah this sort of thing sucks for the guy who gets interviewed without a real shot.

I guess the positive side to that would be it gets their name out there for future jobs.

Possible. He's the youngest candidate out there, unless you take Brandon Beane seriously (Beane is 36).

Some of his competition are in the same boat on the cap issue. It doesn't seem to matter to us because none of our candidates have much history with cap management at all.

The pro scouting thing is a possibility though. Guys like Gettleman and Paton have done scouting at both levels.

You can't let past "examples" of candidates that are passed over not working out (and the jury is very much out on Ron Rivera, btw) color your opinion of Ross. If Panthers brass believes he is the best possible choice, you close on him. I think he will do well. I know many Giants fans, living in NYC, who would love for him to stay with the Giants.

For the record, I don't buy for a second that the Rooney Rule is the reason why the Panthers are interviewing him. Other teams maybe but I don't see that with us.

Why? Ernie Accorsi. You could charge some cronyism there (though in fairness, Ross never worked directly with Accorsi) but I think Accorsi rightly chose him as one of the best available candidates.

And technically, Lake Dawson would double us up on Rooney interviews.

I don't think the Rooney rule is the reason for us either. Ross was one of the first candidates mentioned for the Panthers.

Maybe Ross doesn't interview well, but does a great job. I know I suck at interviewing

I'd love for him to come here, even if it's not as the GM.

Let's say we hire Gettleman. It would still be a promotion to offer Ross a job like Director of Player Personnel (something that would get him that pro scouting experience he lacks).

The other wild theory I had was that Ross goes back to the Giants with a promotion to assistant GM designed to help them hang onto him. Kevin Abrams gets forced out to make room and we hire Abrams as a cap manager (he's considered one of the better ones in the league).

I suppose I could come up with fantasy scenarios that get us Gettleman, Ross and Abrams, but I think if I went there my head might explode :lol:

I was having problems with the huddle on my phone a few days ago when i had a similar thought. If ross's main issue as experience then pay him and gettleman a lot of money and when gettleman retires ross is right there to take over. Unless we continue to suck, in which case theyre both fired!!!
