Gettleman and "trouble" players

lockerroom cancers should be avoided. that wasn't jenkins. people with a sketchy past who have gotten in trouble off the field shouldn't be ruled out outright. if they worked hard to improve their situation, like jenkins did, they should be seriously considered, esp. if the talent was there.

Kid who got in trouble a few times early in his college career and then seemed to clean their acts up shoudl be in play.....gotta do your due diligence big time, but you can't discount them.

Don't know who pulled the trigger but the Giants got rid of Shockey and didn't resign Burris when he got out of prison. Who on their team is a questionable character guy??

I have thought this for a while that the front office, the GM or JR or whoever, is worried more about having good people on the team rather than good players. Thats not a bad thing but it also mean u end up with alot of players past their prime or underperforming their contract rather than young guys who could do the job cheaper and better.

Deanglo is still a good player but i still never understood why he was given the contract he was when we had Stewart and Goodson on the team. TD was another contract that did not make sense from a personal perspective. But if you look at them as people it makes perfect sense. DW does all kinds of charity work and is a great spokesperson for the Panthers organization so does Davis. But is their another team in the NFL that would have given a 29 year old LB with 3 ACL tears a $30+ million contact. Maybe the radiers when Al was in charge but thats all I can think of.

JR grew up around in the south and I think its more of a cutural thing than anything. Alot of small southern business will hire good people over good workers or more qualified people. Trust me I have worked for a few and my dad owns one. Someone that may be more qualified or just better at the job might not get it if he is a bit of a asshole. The better person, nicer, friendler, just better to be around, will usually get the job. I have seen it happen many times in small companies.

JR kind of treats the Panthers like his little small business and until someone comes in and changes some things, like getting better players instead of better people, this is always going to be a medicore team.

Given how Davis worked out this year, you can argue that sticking with him was a good decision as long as we had backup. Plus keeping Williams was a good choice at the time. The contract and guaranteed money is another thing all together.

Talent should never be used as an excuse to overlook character. Doesn't matter how talented a guy is, if he's gonna eff up a locker room, don't bring him in

Ray Lewis is a friggin murderer and he is a great locker room influence. I don't think there's a link between being a low character scumbag and being a football leader- you need scumbags to win in this league.

What is the consensus amongst fans (not just Panther Fans) on Tyron Mattieu (I may have spelt that wrong!). When I first started to follow the sport I heard a lot about this player called 'the honeybadger' but this year I see he got into trouble and was booted out of his school/college team. Is he a player that will see his pick severely affected by off field issues and are his issues to do with attitude?

I think he just likes weed.

I'd take him in a heartbeat. Would instantly be our best DB.

I look at a guy like Vontaze Burfict... he was deemed a trouble player... enough that EVERY team passed on him 7+ times.

He's now the best LB for the Bengals as a rookie, and hasn't been arrested or beat up a teammate. I think people make WAY too much of a player's past. Not everybody who gets in trouble in college is Pacman Jones.

I'd take him after the first couple rounds for sure. I'd even trade up into the third again for him.

It's time to continue moving ourselves further away from the good ole boy mentality and focus on bringing in talented players. There's obviously a line, but questionable character guys need to be options for this franchise.
