Gantt's Rant

Anybodyhome

Recommended Posts

"So to recap, a new general manager (Dave Gettleman) was given a head coach he had no voice in hiring, and now that coach has to replace half a staff and install a new system anyway.

What could possibly go wrong?

The background on the shuffle makes it more frustrating for the Panthers.

When former GM Marty Hurney hired Rivera, he had a list of offensive coordinator candidates in mind along with a list of head coaches. It’s believed that Bengals coordinator Jay Gruden was atop Hurney’s list, but Rivera insisted on Chudzinski instead. Hurney, in a move that may have effectively doomed him, relented and let his new coach pick his own guy.

Chudzinski is widely known as a smart guy, and his Ohio roots will give him a passion for the Browns job they need. But more than one of his former co-workers in Charlotte thought he was coaching to land a head coaching job, rather than using the tools he was given. Hence drawing up all the creative read-option plays, which were cute for a moment, while ignoring the fact he had been given running backs

DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.

The end result is Rivera’s still standing, but scrambling for an answer, and the Panthers look like even more of a disjointed mess this morning than they already did."

yes.

awesome, huh?

sounds like alex smith's history with the 49ers.

See that's the only part that worries me a little.

If Rivera and [new OC here] do not succeed this year we run the risk of giving a third OC to him. I was OK with the change this year because it would have been a total change and then some years of stability again. That seems less likely now.

[Devil's advocate]

There is still the chance that Chud coaching out of his ass and not being intelligent with how the offense was run is a large part of the reason we were so behind the 8-ball this year. A new OC might fix that problem and effectively save Rivera's job. How many times did we want to burn Chud in effigy this year?

Nobody saw Chud leaving. And I love all the snarky fugging comments by these guys in the media.

"It was cute for the moment." It was also effective which is one of the reasons why we finished in back to back season with a top 10 offense in TDs per drive and are 4th in TDs per drive over the last two seasons.

This is the type of poo that makes me hate the media. They are eager to pounce. Gantt seems genuinely upset that Rivera did not get fired.

And one last thing, if Gettleman was that concerned about not hiring his own coach, he could have just not taken the fugging job.

I agree with u. His rantings reads more like he's upset with Rivera not be fired than anything else.

I guess what people are mainly trying to get at is that we are keeping Rivera because of the stability . We aren't showing any stability right now because half of the offensive staff is gone. It seems that we would have been better letting Rivera go because now he is a pretty much a lame duck coach with a new GM.

    • I don't think it was fear of the unknown because he tried to hide the extent of the injuries that made him drop. After the drop, the reports I heard were that teams knew what was wrong with his knee and it was something similar to another athlete from a few years ago (honestly don't remember if it was even a football player).  That it was basically one of those things where he should be fine for a while, there isn't a huge concern of immediate injury risk.   But what he has going on with his knee is something that is degenerative and there's little chance he'll be able to play more than 5 or so years on it before he won't be able to play anymore. So basically it was teams knowing if they draft him, he's probably going to be only a rookie contract player and even if he's great, you might not be able to get use out of him on a second contract.  Which in turn makes the drop make sense, but I'm kinda surprised some contending team didn't take him late in the 1st, hoping he'd put them over the top on a SB run but then not even have to worry about giving him a big contract in 4 years too.
    • Depends if they see the writing on the wall with their roster and contracts and decide to bite the bullet and begin a complete rebuild and roster overhaul.  I have no clue why some franchises (IE us) refuse to do this and keep half assing trying to win 8 games or so.  Do it correctly, take your lumps and build a contender.  We shall see what loomis decides.
    • Each team plays 17 games.  I do not see why they don't just have each team play one international game per year.  Neutral site game, 8 home, 8 away.
