Draft Question

Recommended Posts

I assume Gettle has the power come draft time but I wonder how much pull Rivera will have. Reason I bring it up is I have seen a lot who say DT is a slow position to develop. If that's so I wouldn't think Rivera would want to draft one since he needs production next season

This is Gettleman's team of the future. Its Rivera for one year to boom or bust.

Gettleman will be drafting his players for the future and what he sees as needs. Rivera will have to play with Gettleman's cards. Rivera has no say in this Draft and beyond.

Rivera is not worried about being fired after 2013, no coach ever is. He believes his team is going to get to the playoffs and be successful. That is the mindset that every coach has to have in order to get the players to buy into his system. So he is going to help find the best players he can assuming he is going to be here long term. He will be an integral part of this draft and the next. Once we have back to back winning seasons and he gets an extension he will be here for a while.

I want to believe the same thing, but it aint.

Everyone knows Gettleman is going to draft who he wants for the future. Gettleman's job is safe for the next 4 years. Rivera's job is on the line. Sure Rivera will have input on who to take, but 99% of the decision is Gettleman's.

Gettleman knows talent but Rivera knows what he wants to do with the team and the type of players he needs to run his system. They will work together to figure out who they want. Gettleman will get the final word I suspect but he is too smart to operate in a vacuum and not get plenty of input from his coach and the scouting pros.

No one really even know if Rivera is Gettleman's long term answer. Yes, he looked like he liked Rivera at his press conference. And yes, Im sure JR wanted a GM that wanted to stick with Rivera, but I guarantee that Gettleman is giving 1 year to prove hes the answer. If he start the season like how he did the past two seasons, Gettleman isnt going to hesitate pulling the trigger on him.

Rivera will get some say on who to draft but Gettleman will make the final say on all the players in the upcoming draft.

No one knows if Rivera is the long term answer. He will decide that based on what he does with the team. If he starts out 2-8 again this year of course he is gone. But I don't think that is going to happen. And as long as Rivera is the coach he and Gettleman will be working together to make the team a success. After all if Rivera is a success then Gettleman will get much of the credit. He is going to be Rivera's biggest supporter and do everything he can to ensure he is successful. If things go sour he will cross that bridge when he has to. But guys at this level expect success.

i am expecting to see a couple things in the first round.

1) BPA that is an area of need and someone that can hit the ground running and not look a whole lot like a rookie. i don't expect a project in the first round. maybe in the second, but not the first. that might rule out one of the more difficult positions to vet the hang of, like OG, OT, & DT. unless gettleman can see something special that others miss, most or all of those guys at those positions are going to be gone by #14.

2) from a balance POV, first round offense, second defense. not ruling out the possibility of defense in the first, but i think the board will be more heavily weighted on the offensive side.

with those two things in mind I'm guessing the first pick will be WR or, if a defensive pick, a DB....probably FS if i was forced to choose.

i see gettleman working with rivera, regardless of rivera being on a short leash. its in gettlemans best interest for rivera to do well so he doesn't have to go through the headache of trying to find a new coaching staff...unless he's just looking for an excuse to get his own guy, which i doubt is the case. he's going to be focused on the long term, which will be the focus after the first round, but the first will be more of an immediate impact kind of guy that will give rivera a leg up in the season.

he'll probably do some restructuring, rearranging, and releasing of players, contracts, and cap space to get vet guys who can step in and be solid at a low cost to fill in holes that don't get the immediate fixes in the draft. I'd look for affordable short term 1-2 year deals with older players like ron & dwan mainly to buy some time until a better long term solution could be found. i would also look for a couple of those guys to be the result of draft day trades giving up later draft picks for guys with decent contracts.

at least that's just what I'm thinking.

    • It's definitely a historical issue at QB but to be perfectly blunt, we also don't do a good job of really developing almost any position if you look at the last decade or so. I tend to be on the side of that being far less a development issue than an evaluation deficiency.  I think we are in the situation at QB2/3 recently due to the overall roster being absolutely abhorrent and the QB classes being quite thin. It is harder to justify another Matt Corral(or several) when you can potentially get a real two deep contributor at other positions.  But, it was a lot of hard work to get to the point where are roster is so incredibly bad that luxury picks literally are not in our vocabulary.  This is the reaping what you sow portion of our history.
    • That is what I meant about our front office. They are like someone filling out a March Madness bracket based on preference of uniform colors and mascots. There's no rhyme of reason to some of these fugg'n mind numbing decisions they make.  They go all in on these flimsy-@ss prospects and are gun shy when it comes to more solid prospects.  It's literally maddening and the reason I stopped being so emotionally involved in this team. Heck the only reason I'm active on the board today is one, it's my day off and two, it's cut down time.
