8) Markus Manson-RB

Just curious why you think Manson will make it to the practice squad? I haven't heard anything about him. Assuming Lee and Goodson make the roster, I would think we might substitute a lineman for him on the practice squad, or one of these receivers or returners who have shown flashes of potential.

I think Diggs is starting to show some age. Rumor has it the competition was close last year and Diggs barely won out. I realize Dan is backing up Beason on the depth chart, but with the aggresive nature of the new defense, a heavy body on the strong side isn't what this scheme calls for.

It sounds like Johnson is finally starting to resemble who the Panthers had in mind when they signed him. I think he'll really compete with Diggs for that starting spot. Unfortunately, I guess that leaves Connor as a damn good special teamer and excellent depth, which isn't a bad thing to have.

Purely for numbers. Our running game is cog that makes the offense work. If we have a 2004 scenario again, enough depth shouldn't become an issue. Birmingham, if I'm not mistaken, isn't eligible for the PS.

Honestly, we probably won't keep but 4-5 and fill the remaining spots with cuts from other teams. That's typically what we have done in the past.

As far as Diggs, Johnson and Connor, I think the better call would be Connor though it probably will end up being Johnson or Diggs.

Diggs isn't a Tampa 2 LB.

Here's my thoughts--first by numbers (53 man roster) then by players:

OFFENSE:............ DEFENSE:

QB-3.................... DL-9

RB-6.................... LB-6

WR-5................... CB-5

OL-8.................... S-4

............................24

TE-3

25

ST:

4

OFFENSE:

QB-Delhomme, McCown, Moore

RB-Williams, Stewart, Goodson, Lee (KO man) FB/HB: Hoover, Fiammetta

OL-Kalil, Vincent, Otah, Wharton, Gross, Bernadeau, Robinson, Cadogan,

WR- Smith, Muhammad, Jarrett, Robinson, Beavers (PR man)

TE- King, Rosario, Barnidge

DEFENSE:

DL- Peppers, Lewis, Kemoeatu, Johnson, Brown, Brayton, Irvin, Hayden, Favorite

LB- Davis, Beason, Connor, Diggs, Johnson, Anderson

CB- Gamble, Marshall, Wilson, Martin, Wesley

S- Harris, Godfrey, Salley, Scirrotto

SPECIAL TEAMS:

PK-Kasay K- Lloyd P-Baker LS-Jansen

Overall it looks good, but I think some players could inch their way in.

The QB, RB, and FB positions look good. The OL position looks good but I think the last postion for OL on the 53 man roster will go to the winner of the Geoff Schwartz vs. Gerald Cadogan position battle. For the WR position I think the final WR spot will either go to the winner of the Larry Beavers vs. Jason Carter position battle. The TE position looks good. The DL position looks good, but Hilee Taylor, Lonnie Harvey, Casper Brinkley, and Lorenzo Williams could all challenge for that last DL spot on the roster. The LB position looks good except that Connor will not start over Diggs until he can prove himself in an actual NFL game. The CB position is 100% correct. The saftey position looks good excpet I would have Quinton Teal over Anthony Scirrotto. Finally the Special Teams is easy to get right, so good job there. As far as the practice squad goes it is almost to hard to predict because this Carolina Panthers team has so much depth.

For what it’s worth, it’s “McCown,” not “McNown.” It’s funny how often that mistake is made.

I think as far as skills positions go, the Panthers have more depth now than they have in quite some time. It will be interesting to see which receivers make the squad, especially since one or two of those receivers may be called upon to be our returner (I don’t know that we’ll be able to keep one designated returner, like Larry Beavers, for instance; though that would be nice).

$hit... I knew that. My bad. That is what happens when you don't proof read all if it.

I disagree.. No way do we go into the season with ALL our backups being 1st year Panthers. When all is said and done. These two will be on the roster.

It's not like those guys are veterans or anything. This will be their 2nd year and they were only on the practice squad last season. Whoever plays the best is going to get those spots. I wouldn't be surprised to see both get cut.

Dan has always been a MLB. MLB's are traditionally bigger hitters and slower. I don't know if Connor has the speed to play OLB in the NFL. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Connor is younger and quicker than Diggs. Also, the staff was looking at him on the strong side last year in camp. Remember we still had Seward backing up Beason in the middle initially. We weren't going three deep at MLB. Plus, all of our starting LBs must be able to play all three spots, two miminum.

It's probably a moot point because if Diggs does lose out to someone it would be Johnson. I just have a sneaking suspicion that Connor just may end up in that spot. It's just a gut feeling, no hard facts.

This is how I see us shaping up at this point. The only thing that I can see being a slight problem is the 4 CBs for depth, but we've done it before with only 4. We also typically carry 7 LBs into the season.. I picked Miller cause he's a prototypical size at 243 pounds, without much thought put into it past that.

From what I've read, Favorite hasn't been the light in Barker's eyes so far, so I'm not counting on him to make the team as much as you are. I felt 2 Tackles and 2 guard/centers as backup suited the depth better. Same goes for DL, 2 DE's and 3 DTs round out the roster better imo. I picked Harvey cause he's the only one close to Kemo's size, and we all saw how much it hurt not having that big body in at NT in the Giants game last season.

Anywho, my two coppers thrown into the mix. Feel free to debate it ;)

    • I'm going rogue in R1 but there's so much confusion around us. Last year, we were going Walker or Williams and caught folks off guard with TMac. The previous year we LOVED Legette and it was no surprise when his name was called. This year, I think we nail three areas that weren't totally addressed in FA.  R1 - Kayden McDonald Full disclosure, I want Thienemann here, but think he goes before 19. Some might see an "overdraft" but McDonald unlocks so many people on our D. Having a DT the caliber of McDonald let's Lloyd, Wallace and the newly drafted Hill flood the offensive backfield. Also opens up Moehrig and our EDGES to eat. Lastly, it also removes all the pressure on DB to be the primary facilitator in the trenches and A'Shawn will be missed. I don't care about Turk. McDonald is the only true DT worth of a R1 grade and Morgan seals up our trenches here w/ a kid from a blue blood school. R2 - Anthony Hill Jr *trade up*  I love JRod, but think a smart team takes him at the end of R1 (Seattle, NE w/ two d-minded coaches). Hill, Jr is a beast and lost in the shuffle with all the Styles/Allen/Rodriguez hype. He and Lloyd with DB and McDonald up front and flanked by Scourton/Phillips is nasty.  R3 - Hecht/Lew/Center du jour Let's stop the madness with ignoring this position in the draft. We need one and should start normalizing the capital invested in our OL with someone on a draft contract. He won't need to start day 1, but I think the right selection will push for starter reps. R4 - Bud Clark Not sure if he's here in R4 where we pick, but would fit the "type" of FS/roamer that we need opposite Moehrig and Ransom. Allows us to run 3-safety looks and really keep teams guessing with personnel packages. R5 - Kendrick Law The kind of WR we need. IDK if he's any different than Horn, Jr or Metchie but Law could be a dart throw that brings a deep threat to our WR corps I'm guessing one of the R5 picks is used to move up in R2 along with a '27 day 3 pick.   Post-draft, I sign Njoku to bring in a vet at TE. I'm also keeping my eyes open for pre-week 1 team cuts for a young CB that we could bring in to maybe plan for Mike Jack's departure next year. Flame away.... I know the McDonald pick will not make people happy.
    • Classic example on what AI is not currently good for.  It will create a baseline of statistics (which are fine but must be used alongside tape and other evals) and partner that with every rumor mongering dips*&$t on the web.
